Tulisa’s secret health battle revealed that saw her ‘tearing into her face’ and left with ‘gaping weeping holes’ after I’m A Celeb star opened up on 12-year struggle with Bell’s palsy
As a compassionate observer, I find Tulisa’s journey to be nothing short of inspiring. Her resilience and openness about her struggles with health issues, cosmetic procedures, and self-image are commendable. It’s evident that she has gone through a lot, but she never shies away from sharing her experiences, which can serve as a lesson for many.
More recently, Tulisa Contostavlos shared her challenging 12-year journey with Bell’s Palsy before appearing on I’m A Celebrity.
Unfortunately, this isn’t the first health problem the 36-year-old singer has faced; he also grappled with another serious and painful condition that emerged during his teenage years.
On the premiere episode on Sunday, the member of N-Dubz made an appearance in the well-known jungle, generating a significant response from viewers due to her fresh, changed appearance.
Tulisa had a transformation before her trip to Australia, where she got permanent makeup for her lips and eyebrows, as well as additional lip injections and eyelash extensions.
Rylan, her good friend, was prompt to counter any unfavorable comments that might arise, using Twitter to say: “By the way, before people start commenting on Tulisa’s appearance, she has experienced several health challenges in recent years, so let’s avoid making insensitive jokes about her on Twitter, thank you.” (sic)
Recently, Tulisa has shared insights about the impact her health struggles have had on her physical appearance. She described experiencing severe pain and being terrified it might affect her face permanently.
In 2020, she was diagnosed with Bell’s palsy, a condition affecting the facial nerve which can lead to partial or complete facial paralysis. This happened to her for the first time when she was 24 years old.
However, several years prior, she had been dealing with another distressing ailment, which originated from the depression and anxiety she experienced during her childhood.
Previously, Tulisa disclosed her struggle with dermatillomania, a condition where one compulsively picks their skin, sometimes resulting in pain or injury despite this.
In her 2012 memoir titled “Honest: My Story So Far,” she revealed that she inflicted harm on herself by repeatedly scratching her face with nail clippers for extended periods, resulting in deep and gaping cuts.
Skin picking disorder, also known as dermatillomania, shares a connection with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), as it involves individuals repeatedly picking at their skin, resulting in wounds, bleeding, or bruises using their fingers or instruments.
They add the condition can be triggered by stress, anxiety, guilt, shame, boredom or skin conditions and is also related to body dysmorphic disorder, where the person is excessively preoccupied with their appearance.
Tulisa explained that her habit of picking at her skin started due to the anxiety she experienced as a result of her mom, Anne, dealing with schizoaffective disorder, which is a combination of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
In that phase of my existence, feelings of annoyance and sadness took shape into peculiar and harmful routines that persisted well into my adulthood.
At a certain period, my mother seemed unusually worried, and no matter where I looked, she was always nearby, observing whatever activity I was engaged in.
Feeling confined and lonely at home already weighed heavily on me, but my mom’s persistent worry and hovering presence only added to my anxiety. There were moments when I would retreat to the bathroom, seeking solace from her, as a means of escaping her constant attention.
On one difficult day for Mom, I remember locking myself in the bathroom and starting to pick at a small blemish on my chin.
Experiencing an unusual sensation, difficult to express precisely, I found myself becoming engrossed in focusing on that small area, which somehow helped divert my thoughts from the current predicament.
After spending some time on the first area, I discovered another location, followed by a minor blackhead, and eventually a minuscule mark that didn’t seem like a typical spot. After about an hour, I experienced a great sense of tranquility.
‘I found myself constantly touching and pressing areas on my face that didn’t exist, making it appear as if I had severe acne. This unusual habit of mine became a recurring action.’
Tulisa detailed how her habit of picking at her skin progressively intensified, persisting even during the rise of N-Dubz’s mainstream fame. It would frequently escalate when she experienced stress or anxiety, or whenever she visited her mother once more.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d like to share a personal confession: For some strange reason, I found myself compulsively picking at my face as a means to unwind and escape the pressures of life. Occasionally, this habit would lead me to spend countless hours in front of the mirror, oblivious to the passing time. Little did I know that this seemingly harmless act had morphed into an anxiety disorder known as dermatillomania.
To put it simply, I initially viewed it as an escape from my mother, but it escalated to a point where I was using nail clippers and tweezers to pick at even the smallest blemishes or imperfections on my face.
Occasionally, I’d make a complete mess of my appearance, creating deep, teary wounds that probably looked dreadful. Remarkably fortunate for me, my skin would mend swiftly and with minimal scarring.
For quite some time, nearly daily for years, I indulged in a habit, but it was just three years back when I began to effectively manage my compulsive skin picking (dermatillomania).
As a diehard fan, even during the height of N-Dubz’s triumphs, I’d find myself succumbing to bouts of picking and delving into my skin whenever I felt overwhelmed or stressed.
Whenever I visit my mother for a short spell, I usually develop the habit of picking at my skin once more, and I seem powerless to prevent it.
Tulisa shared that the most difficult period for her occurred during the making of a documentary titled “My Mum and Me” in 2010, since this brought back past emotions.
She disclosed that her superiors and the team in charge of production started accusing her of neglecting her duties and exhibiting uncooperative behavior due to frequent tardiness or absences from work. In response, she provided links to support the validity of her situation, which involved a health issue.
She shared that the documentary focused on young individuals whose parents suffered from serious mental health issues such as severe depression, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia. More importantly, it delved into her personal journey and bond with her mother.
During every week of shooting, I found myself compulsively picking at my skin once more, which frequently resulted in me arriving late to set as I didn’t notice the passing of time while spending extended periods alone in the bathroom.
Initially, it appeared as though I was being challenging and uncooperative by frequently arriving late or absent from work. However, this behavior was actually a result of the distressing memories I was forced to confront regarding my mother, which prompted me to resort to an old, familiar coping mechanism.
Instead of being a teen grappling with troubles, I transformed into a thriving musician. Yet, this achievement only intensified the difficulty in accepting the circumstances.
In an anxious state, I searched for information about my concern online, then shared relevant links with my superiors and colleagues to demonstrate the validity of my situation and assure them I was fulfilling my duties diligently.
“It’s a known condition I have.” However, no one seemed to know about it, and even when they did, they found it hard to comprehend. What added to my misery was the self-loathing I felt for allowing this situation to occur.
In simpler terms, Tulisa reached a point where she couldn’t handle things anymore, leading to a breakdown. Afterward, she sought professional help, including visiting a hypnotist. Since then, she has been able to manage the situation better.
She penned: ‘It got so bad one day that my personal assistant Gareth found me sitting on the floor, rocking back and forth, in tears.
What made me do such harm to myself? I confided in him that I despise myself for my weakness. It’s time for me to consult someone regarding this issue. I’m considering trying a hypnosis session.
‘It was odd because after meeting the hypnotist, I ended up damaging my face more severely than I ever had, but once it recovered, I was able to keep it from happening again. Fingers crossed it stays like this.’
Following a conversation on Olivia Attwood’s podcast this month where Tulisa discussed her struggle with Bell’s palsy, she explained that her face became red and puffy.
She attempted to use fillers to ‘balance out’ her appearance, but soon became locked in a ‘vicious cycle’ of getting the injections.
She confessed that the issues became especially challenging when she reunited with her N-Dubz bandmates Dappy and Fazer in 2022, marking an end to their 11-year absence from the music industry by launching a new tour and releasing a single together.
After conducting an ultrasound examination on her face, the doctor discovered three long-standing, inflamed cysts in her cheek. One of these cysts was particularly large and ruptured during a surgical exploration process.
Tulisa explained that she didn’t know the source of the changes, they weren’t due to injectables or fillers, but rather spontaneous occurrences. Following the surgery, she immediately noticed a decrease in facial swelling.
For two years, the situation remained under control, but then she noticed a subtle, continuous swelling in the same cheek, which quickly grew larger.
She described: ‘I experienced tingling sensations similar to tiny ants crawling on my face. I sought medical help from numerous doctors across the UK – “There’s something wrong with me, what’s wrong with my face?” It was truly terrifying and persisted until this very year, making it horrifying.’
I often experienced a burning sensation on my cheek that fluctuated from day to day. Some days were better than others, and on particularly tough days, I’d use steroids to help reduce the discomfort.
During that N-Dubz period, things were particularly tough for me. So in one interview, I may appear completely normal. But in another, it might seem as if something strange is happening with my facial expressions.
As a lifestyle enthusiast, I’ve found myself grappling with an assortment of health issues over the years, including sarcoidosis and immune system complications. Interestingly, I attribute some of these persistent problems to recurring cysts that have caused me quite a bit of discomfort.
As a dedicated follower, I’d like to pass on this personal account: “For quite some time now, I’ve been dealing with numerous health issues – sarcoidosis, immune disorders, and these conditions have been explaining the symptoms I’ve experienced. They might even have been responsible for Bell’s palsy, as I believe there were about six instances of such symptoms. Over the years, these could have been gradually developing, potentially setting off the onset of Bell’s palsy.
Following numerous trials, Tulisa chose to eliminate facial fillers and currently restricts their use to her lips instead.
She added: ‘Right now, I only have filler in my lips. There’s no filler anywhere else in my face.’
Tulisa is known for being transparent about her use of lip fillers, and she’s even made light-hearted jokes about her well-known “trout pout” mishap in the past.
In the year 2014, the rising star drew attention with a noticeably fuller lip appearance, causing some fans to remark about apparent rapid facial transformations.
Recalling the event, the celebrity shared on Lorraine: “I experienced different phases, I seemed to have an allergic response to something, and it took some time for me to fully recover from it.
Every now and then, I treat myself to lip enhancements, not for change, but to keep up the look I’ve got now. It’s like giving my lips a little touch-up, a fresh coat of confidence, if you will.
In another part of the podcast, Tulisa shared her intention to undergo a fat transfer procedure at some point, as it could potentially reduce the facial bruising that currently causes her distress.
She shared: ‘I’ve observed that when I receive multiple steroid injections in this cheek, it swells due to inflammation.’
With the reduction in swelling, I’m now left with noticeable indentations on my cheek. I’ve been trying to conceal them with makeup, but it doesn’t ease my concern. Frankly, I dislike having these depressions or any imperfections on my face – it’s not a pleasant feeling knowing that something is off about my appearance.
However, I’ll gently remove some makeup to let you see clearly. It resembles a bruise, this indentation is what it appears as.
One long-lasting option I plan to consider later on is fat transfer; however, for the moment, I’ll opt for a treatment called Profhio.
In simpler terms, a surgical fat transfer is a type of plastic surgery where fat is taken from one area of your body and moved to another. It can also be referred to as a “fat injection” or “body sculpting”.
Before my upcoming fat transfer procedure, I shared that I’ve been undergoing Profhilo treatment to minimize potential bruising. This treatment is known for enhancing skin tone, texture, hydration, and overall radiance. It also helps boost firmness, elasticity, and promotes a healthier, softer-looking complexion.
