As a gamer who has lived through the rollercoaster ride of tech-induced anxieties and survived to tell the tale, I must say that A24’s latest offering, Y2K, strikes a chord deep within my heart. You see, I was one of those kids who had their allowance saved up for a shiny new millennium computer, only to find myself staring at a blank screen on the stroke of midnight, 1999-2000.
Hey, do you recall the Y2K issue, also known as the “millennium bug”? As we approached the year 2000, there was a lot of commotion because many people feared that all resources would stop functioning at exactly midnight on December 31, transitioning to January 1.
Essentially, numerous software systems weren’t designed to handle the shift from “19” to “20” in that particular year, potentially leading to situations where files could become inaccessible, power grids might fail, and so on.
Indeed, technical glitches cropped up at exactly midnight, but fortunately, things didn’t turn into the catastrophe that some predicted. Interestingly, A24’s latest production titled “Y2K” explores this very panic as its central theme.
The star-studded lineup for December 31, 1999, included Jaeden Martell (known for It, Arcadian, and The Lodge), Rachel Zegler (famous for Shazam! Fury of the Gods and The Hunger Games: The Ballads of Songbirds and Snakes), Julian Dennison (recognized from Deadpool 2 and Godzilla vs. Kong), Australian rapper the Kid Laroi, Fred Durst, and Alicia Silverstone.
While A24 is predominantly recognized for its intense horror films like The Witch, Hereditary, Midsommar, and Talk to Me, the upcoming movie Y2K appears to have a comedic slant – however, it’s worth noting that A24 has also produced Bodies Bodies Bodies, which leans more towards dark comedy.

What is A24’s Y2K about?
Y2K – A Dial-Up Disaster Comedy
Previously known SNL cast member, Kyle Mooney, helms the movie titled “Y2K” that he co-penned with Evan Winter. The film is set to be released in cinemas across the country starting from December 26.
