Yakuza Creator Toshihiro Nagoshi Thinks Smaller Games Are Totally Fine
As a long-time fan of Toshihiro Nagoshi‘s masterpieces, particularly the Yakuza series, I wholeheartedly agree with his perspective on the growing trend towards bigger and bigger video games. Having spent countless hours exploring the intricately detailed streets of Kamurocho, I can attest to the fact that size is not always a determinant of quality or enjoyment.
Toshihiro Nagoshi, the mind behind Yakuza, has voiced his opinions on the continuous demand for larger and larger video games, asserting that compact games are equally satisfying.
In an interview with Famitsu (via VGC), Nagoshi was asked about his new studio’s debut game.
Nagoshi expressed his desire to create a game that is engaging yet easy to enjoy, without requiring excessive effort. He acknowledged the abundance of games, even if many aren’t completely original, stating that with the multitude of titles available worldwide, it’s impractical to play every single one.
Given the current state of things, it seems to me that the quantity of console games in the hands of average gamers might be somewhat overwhelming. Although new games continue to come out, I have a feeling we’re moving away from an era where sheer volume drives sales.
It’s an interesting point, and, if you look at the Yakuza games in particular, you can see where Nagoshi is coming from. Kamurocho is a bounded space, nowhere near the scale of other open-world games, but it is rich in depth.
As a fan, I can’t help but wonder if Nagoshi’s upcoming game will feature a more expansive world this time around? Nagoshi shares, “Initially, while delving into existing games, we embarked on creating a substantial map complete with roads and highways. Currently, we are meticulously scaling it down and finding the optimal balance for our game.
