Love her or not, Sydney Sweeney is everywhere. Even though a planned appearance in The Devil Wears Prada 2 was reportedly removed because it didn’t fit the film’s story, she’s constantly visible on advertisements, social media, the show Euphoria, and is landing a lot of exciting roles in Hollywood.
Sydney Sweeney recently starred in Paul Feig’s The Housemaid with Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar, a role that helped revitalize her career after a few unsuccessful films. While those earlier movies didn’t perform well at the box office, they often featured strong stories and showcased Sweeney’s talent, even in supporting roles.
Eden Was One Of Sweeney’s Greater Performances
The film Eden is inspired by real events involving a group of Europeans who grew tired of conventional middle-class life and decided to start over on a secluded island in the Galápagos. Dr. Friedrich Ritter, Dore Strauch, Margret and Heinz Willmer were among those who moved, but their peaceful existence was disrupted by the arrival of a woman who called herself Baroness Eloise Bosquet de Wagner Wehrhorn, and her extravagant lifestyle on Floreana Island.
The film frequently features intense and violent scenes. Though surrounded by well-known actors like Vanessa Kirby, Ana de Armas, and Jude Law, Rebecca Ferguson delivers a particularly raw and emotional performance as Margret. Despite being based on a compelling true story, the movie suffers from somewhat flat direction by Ron Howard, especially in its later scenes.
Americana’s Western-Inspired Thrills Were Enjoyable
The film features a talented cast including Paul Walter Hauser, Eric Dane, Halsey, and Zahn McClarnon. The actress stars as Penny Jo Poplin, a sweet but shy waitress in a small South Dakota town who longs to be a country music star. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she becomes involved in a dangerous robbery involving a sacred Lakota Ghost shirt, a culturally significant Native American item, which leads to dramatic and tense confrontations reminiscent of classic Westerns.
The film features unusual characters, such as Cal, who claims Native American heritage despite not being one, and Roy, a dealer who profits from stolen artifacts. Americana aimed high, blending Western themes with a message about respecting and protecting Native American objects and traditions, but ultimately fell a little short of its goals.
Anyone But You Was Sizzling With Chemistry Between Sydney Sweeney And Glenn Powell
The new romantic comedy, inspired by Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, has been getting a lot of buzz. It follows Bea, a law student, and Ben, who works at Goldman Sachs. They have an instant connection and a wonderful first date, but a series of miscommunications the next morning causes them to break things off.
Ben and Bea unexpectedly cross paths at a wedding – Bea’s sister’s, to be exact. After some initial arguing on the flight to Australia, they come up with a scheme: they’ll pretend to be a couple. This plan is designed to keep Bea’s parents from interfering and to make Ben’s ex-girlfriend jealous. Anyone But You delivers all the classic romantic comedy moments – think enemies becoming lovers and fake relationships – and the strong connection between the two leads helped bring the romcom genre back into the spotlight in 2023.
Nocturne Is Supernatural Horror-Lite
If you loved Black Swan, you’ll probably find a lot to enjoy in Nocturne. It’s a new movie from Blumhouse, written and directed by Zu Quirke, and it really grabbed me. It’s about twin sisters, Juliet and Vivian, who are both incredibly talented pianists at a really competitive arts school. Vivian has always been the star, but after a student mysteriously takes their own life, Juliet finds a notebook that seems to help her catch up – and even surpass – her sister’s skills. It’s a dark and twisty story!
Despite an interesting idea, the movie Nocturne received a lukewarm score of 62% on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics feeling it didn’t fully explore its darker potential. However, Sydney Sweeney stood out with a compelling performance as Juliet, portraying a driven and troubled young woman willing to do whatever it takes to succeed.
Big Time Adolescence Is An Atypical Coming Of Age Film
The 2019 film, directed by Jason Orley, centers around Mo, a teenager who looks up to his sister’s boyfriend, Zeke, even though Zeke isn’t a good role model. After Zeke breaks up with Mo’s sister and starts dating Holly, Mo continues to seek Zeke’s approval, and gets pulled into a lifestyle of parties and drugs with Zeke and his friends.
The movie explores some relationship confusion when Mo enters the picture, but it’s mostly about the strong friendship between the two main characters, even with all the typical teenage drama. While Big Time Adolescence came early in Sweeney’s career and she isn’t the main focus, she does a good job of making Holly feel like a real person, not just someone who exists to support the stories of Zeke and M. Holly’s cynical but insightful personality stands out in a genre filled with similar characters.
Immaculate Is Faith-Based Horror That Explores Female Bodily Autonomy
As a film fan, I’m always impressed when an actor really commits to a role, and Sydney Sweeney absolutely does that in Immaculate. She plays Cecilia, a young woman who finds faith after a near-drowning, and ends up at a convent in Italy. But things quickly get creepy! It turns out the convent isn’t what it seems, and Cecilia finds herself in a truly terrifying situation – she’s pregnant, despite never being intimate with anyone, and people start seeing her as the next Virgin Mary. It’s a wild ride, and honestly, pretty unsettling!
I was really struck by Immaculate. Without spoiling anything, it deals with the scary idea of men controlling women’s bodies, and honestly, that feels especially powerful and important right now. The movie builds this intense dread as Cecilia starts to realize just what’s happening to her, and it’s truly unsettling.
Christy Was Sydney Sweeney’s Attempt At Prestige Cinema
Though often known for playing alluring characters, the actress took on a very personal and powerful role in Christy, a film directed by David Michôd, where she also served as a producer. The movie tells the inspiring true story of Christy Martin, a boxing superstar of the 1990s and a fan favorite. But Christy also reveals the harrowing experience of domestic abuse and a near-fatal attack by her husband and boxing coach, James, and her fight to overcome it.
The film Christy focused on themes of resilience and staying true to yourself, and the actor, Sweeney, underwent a significant physical change to portray the boxer. Despite a disappointing opening weekend at the box office – earning just $1.3 million – audiences loved the movie, giving it a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood
Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood (2019), though featuring a minor role for Sydney Sweeney, is a standout film worthy of a higher ranking. It’s a fictionalized take on the events surrounding the 1969 Manson Murders, beautifully capturing the fading glamour of Hollywood’s Golden Age. The story follows a veteran stuntman and actor as it intersects with the lives of figures like Sharon Tate and Charles Manson and his followers.
In Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood, Sweeney portrays Snake, a minor character and one of Charles Manson’s followers who appears briefly with limited dialogue. The film primarily centers on the leading actors: Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt, and Leonardo DiCaprio.
The Housemaid Cemented Sydney Sweeney’s Comeback
Following a string of unsuccessful films, Sydney Sweeney found success with the R-rated thriller, The Housemaid, starring alongside Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar. The movie, adapted from Freida McFadden’s novel, tells the story of Millie, a young woman who gets a job as a housemaid at the Winchester House. However, she quickly discovers things aren’t what they seem, as the homeowner, Nina Winchester, begins to manipulate and torment her.
The film successfully revived the over-the-top style of classic erotic thrillers, and director Paul Feig fully embraced the genre’s campy energy. Seyfried and Sweeney deliver a captivating, competitive dynamic reminiscent of Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, culminating in a shocking surprise towards the end. Due to its popularity, a follow-up film, The Housemaid’s Secret, is already in development.
Reality Is A Tense Exploration Of The Whistleblower
Whistleblowing is often seen as a noble act, but it’s rarely simple. The 2023 film Reality, directed by Tina Satter, explores this complexity through the story of Reality Winner, a 25-year-old NSA translator accused of leaking information about Russian interference in the 2016 US election. The movie is unique because it’s based directly on transcripts of the FBI’s search and investigation at Winner’s home in Georgia. To show the redacted portions of the conversations, the filmmakers used visual glitches on the screen in an innovative way.
The film won a 2023 Peabody Award and is critically acclaimed, with a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This role was her most demanding yet, firmly establishing her acting ability as her greatest asset.
