Filming on Henry Cavill’s Highlander Highlander movie delayed again

As a seasoned movie critic with decades of film viewing under my belt, I must admit that the prospect of the reboot of “Highlander” has me both excited and slightly apprehensive. On one hand, the casting of Henry Cavill as Connor MacLeod is a stroke of genius – his chiseled features and action prowess are undeniably fitting for the role. And with Chad Stahelski at the helm, known for his masterful direction of the “John Wick” series, this could very well be an exhilarating action spectacle.

As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the potential return of the iconic series “Highlander,” where immortal warriors clash across the globe until only one remains. The famous phrase goes, “There can be only one.” Henry Cavill, who has charmed the internet, hinted at this revival, taking on the leading role originally portrayed by Christopher Lambert in the 1986 film. Chad Stahelski, acclaimed director of the “John Wick” franchise, will helm this new production, promising an exhilarating action-packed experience. Cavill hinted to The Hollywood Reporter that his swordplay skills in this venture would outshine anything we’ve seen before.

Initially, Cavill had anticipated starting filming for Highlander this year, but it was postponed to early 2025. However, the production schedule has been further delayed, with Redanian Intelligence suggesting that the filming will now commence in May of 2025 instead of January. This seems to be due to Cavill’s commitment to a Voltron movie during the first part of the year, explaining his busy schedule.

Despite being in the early stages of production, the crew is scouting various locations for the upcoming Highlander film, including Scotland, Italy, and Hong Kong. Given that these immortal characters battle across the globe, it’s no surprise that director Stahelski envisions this movie as the start of a potential series or franchise. In an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, he explained that while our story shares connections with previous characters, they are also incorporating elements from all the TV shows and setting up events leading to The Gathering, which provides room for future expansion of the property.

In simpler terms, “The Gathering” is a fictional event where the remaining immortal characters from the series “Highlander” fight each other. The winner obtains the combined strength of all immortals, referred to as “the prize.” However, isn’t it wishful thinking that all immortals can coexist peacefully? Clearly not, or there wouldn’t be a storyline. It seems like this event might not take place in the first film, according to director Stahelski’s comments.

Delay or no, the new Highlander movie is scheduled to come out in 2026.
