I’ve been a huge fan of Tom Hanks for decades, and it’s easy to see why he’s become such a legend. He just has a way of making every role incredibly believable and touching. He’s worked with some of the best directors out there – people like Robert Zemeckis and Steven Spielberg keep coming back to him! But it’s not just that he is a star, he’s also amazing at working with other actors – his chemistry with Meg Ryan and Gary Sinise is always fantastic.
Over the past few decades, Tom Hanks has become one of Hollywood’s most successful and respected actors thanks to his consistent ability to create popular and critically acclaimed films – some even winning Oscars. From beloved franchises like Toy Story to romantic comedies like Sleepless in Seattle, intense war dramas like Saving Private Ryan, and gripping thrillers like Captain Phillips, Hanks has built an impressive and diverse film career.
However, one of his greatest films was released 25 years ago. It featured a well-respected director, an unexpected co-star, and some of the actor’s best work. Now, your chance to see it – either for the first time or again – is almost over.
Cast Away Is Leaving Netflix On April 7
If you’re looking for a good Tom Hanks movie to watch this week, check out Cast Away on Netflix. It’s a gripping survival story, but it will be removed from the streaming service on April 7th. There’s no word yet on where it will be available to stream after that, so if you don’t have a copy or want to avoid renting, now’s the time to watch it on Netflix.
If you haven’t seen the 2000 film Cast Away, it stars Tom Hanks as Chuck Noland, a FedEx worker. The movie, based on a true story, begins around Christmas time. Chuck is sent to Malaysia to resolve an issue for FedEx, but his plane crashes, and he’s the only survivor, washing up on a deserted island.
Robert Zemeckis, who previously directed Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump, also directed Cast Away. The film primarily features Hanks as the only character, with Helen Hunt playing a significant supporting role as his girlfriend, Kelly Frears. Instead of a typical co-star, the movie gives Chuck a companion in Wilson, a volleyball he finds on the beach.
Overall, Cast Away is a gripping and emotional survival story, balancing intense moments with humor and sadness. Many consider it to be among Tom Hanks’ finest performances. The film was also a commercial success, grossing $429 million worldwide and earning two Academy Award nominations, including a nomination for Hanks himself.
Tom Hanks’ Performance Is Reason Enough To Watch Cast Away
While there are many good things about Cast Away, Tom Hanks’ performance is what truly stands out. He essentially carries the entire film, and it’s his job to make the audience feel connected to a man who’s completely alone and desperate to return to his former life. Hanks succeeds brilliantly, captivating viewers whether he’s on screen by himself or even having a conversation with a volleyball.
While Tom Hanks’ powerful acting is central to the film, his physical transformation is equally important. Production on Cast Away was actually stopped so Hanks could realistically portray the effects of isolation by losing around 50 pounds and growing his hair out, showing the character’s struggle during his time stranded on the island.
Many consider Cast Away to be one of Tom Hanks’s greatest performances, largely due to his dedication to the role. It’s remarkable the film worked at all, considering the doubts Hanks, director Robert Zemeckis, and others had during production. In a 2000 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Hanks described the physical and emotional changes he underwent as “a burden,” and questioned whether audiences would care about his character’s isolation, asking, “But the problem is, who’s going to care?”
Viewers were definitely invested in Chuck’s struggle for survival. A lot of that is thanks to Tom Hanks’ acting. Without his performance, Cast Away likely wouldn’t have become the beloved classic it is today.
