It’s a surprising choice that Warner Bros. is continuing James Gunn’s Superman with a Supergirl movie – the first in four decades. They had many options for a DC film, like Batman, Green Lantern, The Flash, or even a more obscure hero like Crimson Fox. (Though, let’s be honest, most of us probably don’t remember Crimson Fox!)
The filmmakers chose to move forward with a Supergirl movie, drawing heavily from the recent comic book series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. This means the early films in the new DC Universe will feature a lot of Kryptonian characters. However, Superman was successful and well-received, and the new trailer for Supergirl confirms that David Corenswet’s Superman will have at least a cameo. It’s likely his role will be limited to what’s shown in the trailer, though it wouldn’t be surprising to see him reappear briefly at the end, similar to how Supergirl appeared at the end of Superman, hinting at Corenswet’s return in Man of Tomorrow next year.

There’s also a ridiculously adorable poster for the film as well.

Here is the film’s official synopsis:
This summer, Warner Bros. Pictures will release “Supergirl,” the latest film from DC Studios, in theaters globally. Milly Alcock stars as Supergirl, also known as Kara Zor-El. The movie is directed by Craig Gillespie, with a screenplay written by Ana Nogueira.
Supergirl is scheduled to open in theaters on June 26.
Actors Who Turned Down DC Roles

1. Warren Beatty, Superman
I always found it fascinating to learn about who almost played Superman! Before Christopher Reeve got the part in the 1978 movie, the producers approached a lot of famous actors, including Warren Beatty, who was huge at the time. He actually told everyone he was offered the role, but he didn’t think turning a comic book into a movie was a good idea. He even tried on some long underwear to see how he’d look in the Superman costume! He said it looked so silly that he immediately called them back and turned the part down. It’s funny, because he later directed and starred in Dick Tracy in 1990, proving he changed his mind about comic book movies! Though, thankfully for him, his character didn’t have to wear Spandex.

2. James Caan, Superman
James Caan, a popular actor in the 1970s known for films like The Godfather and Rollerball, was also considered for the role of Superman. Interestingly, Mario Puzo, who wrote The Godfather, helped write the Superman screenplay. Despite this connection, Caan turned down the part, later saying he didn’t like the script’s playful tone.

3. Pierce Brosnan, Batman
Before becoming famous as James Bond, Pierce Brosnan was considered for the role of Batman. He met with director Tim Burton about the part, but ultimately turned it down, jokingly saying he couldn’t imagine taking a character who wears his underwear on the outside of his pants seriously. Brosnan now says he regrets that decision, calling it “foolish.” Interestingly, he’s now joining the DC universe as Doctor Fate in the upcoming film Black Adam. It remains to be seen if Doctor Fate will have the same fashion choice as Batman!

4. Madonna, Catwoman
In the early 1990s, Madonna was a successful movie star when Tim Burton considered her for the role of Catwoman in Batman Returns. It felt like a perfect fit, but she turned it down. Years later, she admitted to Jimmy Fallon that she regretted the decision, calling the role “fierce.” Ultimately, Michelle Pfeiffer played Catwoman and delivered a powerful performance.

5. Leonardo DiCaprio, Robin
Imagine how Leonardo DiCaprio’s career might have changed if he’d taken the role of Robin in Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever. Would he still have starred in Titanic? It’s a question we can’t answer. What we do know is that Schumacher approached DiCaprio about playing Robin, and the actor admitted to meeting with the director, but not being interested in the part. When asked if he was glad he turned it down, DiCaprio simply laughed.

6. Jude Law, Superman
Before the 2006 film Superman Returns, Warner Bros. launched another large search for an actor to play Superman. Jude Law, who was receiving praise for films like The Talented Mr. Ripley, A.I. Artificial Intelligence, Cold Mountain, and Closer, was among those considered. Law revealed to Stephen Colbert that he wasn’t interested in the role, but he did agree to try on the Superman suit. He described looking in the mirror and realizing what it would mean to be Superman on posters everywhere, which ultimately led him to quickly change his mind and zip the suit open. Ultimately, Brandon Routh was cast as Superman, taking over from Christopher Reeve.

7. Josh Hartnett, Superman AND Batman
Josh Hartnett was another strong contender to play Superman in the planned reboot, Superman Returns. He was a rising star in the early 2000s and was actually offered a deal worth around $100 million to star in three movies as the Man of Steel – but he declined. Interestingly, Hartnett also turned down the chance to play a young Bruce Wayne in Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins, making him the only actor to reject roles as both Superman and Batman. Years later, Hartnett admitted turning down Nolan was a mistake, explaining to Playboy that he was simply burned out and prioritized spending time with loved ones – something that’s not always valued in Hollywood.

8. Paul Walker, Superman
Paul Walker was a rising star thanks to his role in The Fast and the Furious when he was considered for the part of Superman in Superman Returns. He spoke with director Richard Donner, who had previously directed Christopher Reeve in Superman and also worked with Walker on Timeline, about whether or not to take the role. Walker asked Donner if he needed the part, and Donner advised him to only do it if he genuinely wanted it, not just for the money. Worried about being typecast as Superman, Walker realized Donner’s advice was clear. Ultimately, that’s why Paul Walker didn’t appear in Superman Returns.

9. Will Smith, Superman
Will Smith, similar to Paul Walker, declined the role of Superman, worried it could harm his career. He revealed in a 2008 MTV interview that he was offered the part in Superman Returns, but felt strongly against it. He explained that after playing Jim West in Wild Wild West, he didn’t want to take on another established white superhero role. Eventually, Smith did play a DC character, appearing as Deadshot in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad. So, it worked out in the end… somewhat.

10. Heath Ledger, Batman
Heath Ledger famously played the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight and received widespread praise for his performance. Interestingly, Nolan initially considered Ledger for the role of Batman in Batman Begins. Ledger was polite about not getting the part, even telling Nolan he wasn’t interested in superhero films. However, after seeing Nolan’s darker and more realistic take on the Batman universe in Batman Begins, Ledger changed his mind and accepted the role of the Joker in The Dark Knight.

11. Matt Damon, Harvey Dent
Imagine a world where Heath Ledger played Batman instead of the Joker, and Matt Damon was Two-Face instead of Aaron Eckhart! Damon later explained he wasn’t uninterested in the role, but a scheduling conflict prevented him from even discussing it with director Christopher Nolan. He complimented Eckhart’s performance, acknowledging the film turned out great anyway. Still, it’s a fascinating “what if” scenario for any movie fan.

12. Keanu Reeves, Dr. Manhattan
Keanu Reeves was already known to DC fans, having played the lead in the 2005 film Constantine, when Zack Snyder offered him the role of Doctor Manhattan in his Watchmen movie. Reeves said he considered the part, but it ultimately didn’t come together, and Billy Crudup ended up playing Doctor Manhattan. More recently, Reeves has expressed interest in revisiting his role as Constantine if Warner Bros. decides to make another film.

13. Jon Hamm, Green Lantern
Many fans thought Jon Hamm, known for his role in Mad Men, was a perfect fit to play Green Lantern, and Warner Bros. definitely approached him about it. However, Hamm wasn’t interested in the role. He later explained that while they pursued him actively, he simply wasn’t excited about the idea, stating he doesn’t typically enjoy superhero movies. Interestingly, he does enjoy comic-book content on television, having voiced characters in shows like Invincible and M.O.D.O.K, where he even played Tony Stark in several episodes.

14. Jake Gyllenhaal, Rick Flag
Jake Gyllenhaal was among the actors considered to play the super-soldier Rick Flag in the movie Suicide Squad, and his decision to turn down the role was even reported by Variety. Before approaching Gyllenhaal, Tom Hardy was also a possibility. Joel Kinnaman eventually landed the part and reprised it in the 2021 sequel. Gyllenhaal later joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe, playing Mysterio in Spider-Man: Far From Home.

15. Charlize Theron, Wonder Woman
Charlize Theron, a talented and experienced action star, was once considered for a role in the Wonder Woman franchise. However, instead of being asked to play Wonder Woman herself, Warner Bros. offered her the part of Wonder Woman’s mother. Theron found this frustrating, describing it as a clear example of ageism in Hollywood. She shared the story on Watch What Happens Live, explaining she initially thought they wanted her for the lead role. She was surprised when she learned they wanted her to play Wonder Woman’s mother instead. Theron was 40 years old at the time, ten years older than Gal Gadot, who ultimately played Wonder Woman, and ten years younger than Connie Nielsen, who played Queen Hippolyta.
