District Attorney Gascón requested a judge on Thursday to reconsider the sentences of Erik and Lyle Menendez, who are currently serving life terms for the 1989 murders of their parents, Kitty and Jose Menendez. If granted and they were resentenced to 50 years to life with the possibility of parole, these brothers could potentially be eligible for youthful-offender parole right away, given that they were under 26 at the time of the crime and have already served almost 35 years. This could result in their early release.

Lorena Menendez’s brother expressed appreciation on Thursday via an Instagram story, praising District Attorney George Gascón for reviewing the Menendez brothers’ case. He thanked him for correcting a substantial injustice and acknowledged his dedication to truth and justice.

Earlier this month, District Attorney Gascón disclosed that his team is re-examining the Menendez case following a habeas petition submitted by the brothers’ lawyers last year. The petition stated that fresh evidence corroborated the brothers’ decades-old allegation of sexual abuse by their father prior to the murders. During the sensational 1995 trial, the judge tightly limited any testimony that could have provided a defense based on “abuse as an excuse.” This restriction facilitated the brothers’ conviction and sentencing in 1996, which included life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

In her post, the founder of Skims assured the numerous individuals who have advocated for a fresh look at this case that their voices were not only heard but acknowledged and appreciated.

In her writing, she pointed out that the media’s intense scrutiny, particularly following Ryan Murphy’s TV series, brought attention to the mistreatment and injustices they experienced. She further noted that our collective understanding of child abuse has progressed, and social media provides us with the means to challenge existing systems.

Last month, Netflix released Ryan Murphy’s “Monsters: The Story of Lyle and Erik Menendez,” which is a dramatized portrayal of the murders. Murphy described it as an event that has been beneficial for the Menendez brothers over the past 30 years because it encourages conversations about the case, and raises important questions. This production was one among many media pieces inspired by the Menendez story.

The Menendez case “highlights the importance of challenging decisions and seeking truth, even when guilt is not in question,” Kardashian wrote.

She expressed faith that our legal system is capable of adapting and improving, and she appreciates living in a community where people can contest rulings and strive for fairness. Her advice was to always keep questioning.

A celebrity from “The Kardashians” show recently wrote an emotional article advocating for a reexamination of the life imprisonment sentences handed down to their brothers.

In the article, she asserted that the brothers, whom she claimed were portrayed as “monstrous and tabloid fodder,” were denied a fair trial during their legal proceedings due to limited resources available for victims of sexual abuse, particularly male victims. The general public, according to her, showed little understanding or compassion towards two privileged teenagers from Beverly Hills at the time.

The Menendez brothers were perceived more as “serial killers,” according to a criminal justice reform advocate and budding attorney, rather than as “two individuals who suffered years of sexual abuse at the hands of those they deeply loved and relied upon.

She expressed her opinion that it wouldn’t be just to keep them confined for life based on this intricate situation. If this crime had occurred and gone to trial now, she felt strongly that the results would significantly change.

In a recent interview with CNN on Tuesday, Gascón agreed with Kardashian’s observations, stating, “During that period, there was likely unconscious bias at play which could have influenced how the case was viewed and argued before the jury.

In addition, the District Attorney announced on Thursday that the two brothers have long been involved in prison initiatives aimed at aiding inmates in coping with traumatic experiences and providing support to those with physical impairments.

Previously, Kardashian paid a visit to her imprisoned brothers. Moreover, she attested to their exceptional behavioral records, emphasizing that they have acquired numerous academic degrees, provided care for elderly inmates in hospice, and served as mentors within college programs – all while being dedicated to helping others.

She stated that the actions, although unjustifiable, should not prevent us from recognizing who they have become in their current, senior years.

Despite Lori Kardashian’s statement on her recent Instagram post suggesting that the Menendez brothers are now instantly eligible for parole due to a reduced sentence of 50 years to life, it appears their new sentencing is yet to be determined.

If Judge’s approval adopts Gascón’s suggestion, the brothers’ future remains in the hands of the Parole Board, who will determine if they should be freed. Governor Gavin Newsom retains the power to override the Parole Board’s ruling on their release.
