Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown Studio Reportedly Disbanded Putting Kibosh on Possible Sequel
As a long-time gamer with a soft spot for the Prince of Persia series, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment hearing about the potential demise of the sequel to this year’s “Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown.” Having spent countless hours navigating intricate levels and mastering acrobatic moves in the previous games, I was eagerly anticipating a new adventure.
There’s a possibility that we won’t see a follow-up to this year’s “Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown,” given that Ubisoft appears to have dissolved the Montpellier studio responsible for the game, due to the sales falling short of expectations.
As a gamer, I’ve heard it straight from the source – YouTuber Gautoz (via WCCFTech) – and here’s what he’s saying: He’s privy to Ubisoft Montpellier’s inner circle, and he claims that contrary to the hopes of those more optimistic within the core team, there won’t be a sequel to Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. It seems like our dreams for another installment might have been dashed.
Parts of the narrative from the original pitch were allegedly incorporated into The Lost Crown’s ‘Mask of Darkness’ expansion pack. However, the notion of a sequel was thought to be too risky for Ubisoft, as they feared that developing another game could potentially cannibalize the long-term sales of the initial title. Regarding the production process, it was relatively smooth, suggesting that any future installments might be produced under favorable conditions.
According to the report, the creation of Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown wasn’t problematic at all – quite the contrary. For example, there was overtime work, or “crunch,” but this production had a very strong team spirit, which sets it apart from how Ubisoft typically develops games with 80 to 100 people, as this is relatively small compared to their usual scale.
Some team members managed to avoid complete exhaustion due to excessive work on “Beyond Good and Evil 2”, while others struggling in their careers were able to regain their footing with The Lost Crown project. However, these measures seem to have had little lasting impact on Ubisoft Montpellier, as suggested by the report – “the major restructuring at Ubisoft Montpellier is effectively erasing any remnants of that team”, it alleges.
It appears that the future of Beyond Good and Evil 2 remains uncertain, but it’s looking unlikely that we’ll see a sequel to “The Lost Crown” edition of Prince of Persia.
