Mike Flanagan developing a Carrie television series for Amazon

Today brings exciting news for fans of Mike Flanagan, the acclaimed horror director, as he’s set to adapt another work by Stephen King. This time, it’s a TV adaptation of “Carrie” for Amazon. Flanagan has taken on various tales by Stephen King, such as Gerald’s Game, Doctor Sleep, and more recently The Life of Chuck. The latter won’t hit theaters until 2025 via Neon, but it garnered a lot of positive attention during its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it took home the People’s Choice Award. Additionally, Flanagan isn’t new to television, having produced acclaimed shows like Midnight Mass, The Fall of the House of Usher, and The Haunting of Hill House. He’s also working on a TV version of King’s Dark Tower series.
Speaking of the upcoming “Carrie” TV series, it’s important to note that this isn’t the first attempt at adapting Stephen King’s famous 1974 novel for television. In fact, FX had been working on a series before, but there has been little news about its progress recently, which may suggest that the project might have been cancelled.
In the world of film, Brian De Palma’s 1976 directorial work, “Carrie,” featuring Sissy Spacek as the lead character, remains a fan favorite and widely watched. However, there have been several screen adaptations, such as the 2002 television movie version and the 2013 remake starring Chloë Grace Moretz. A less successful sequel named “The Rage: Carrie 2” was also released. Interestingly, the musical adaptation of “Carrie” has gained its own following as well.
There’s plenty of opportunity to reimagine Carrie, giving it a contemporary twist while staying true to its roots. One unique aspect that hasn’t been explored is adapting the book’s epistolary style, which involves the narrative being presented primarily through diary entries and newspaper articles. This approach could work particularly well for a TV series, offering more depth in character development leading up to the iconic prom scene.
King recently reposted on his account (previously Twitter) a suggestion about Flanagan adapting ‘Carrie’. The post proposes that studios should consider allowing Flanagan to adapt ‘Salem’s Lot’ instead, as it’s been a while since it had a good adaptation.
Given that Max has just debuted his latest adaptation of “Salem’s Lot”, I believe the retweet offers a clear indication of King’s feelings towards it.
