Liam Payne’s complicated love-hate relationships with his One Direction bandmates proved they truly were a family

As someone who has spent a significant part of my life in the limelight, I can empathize with both Liam Payne and Niall Horan’s unique experiences within One Direction. It seems their relationship evolved from shared fame to separate paths, which is not uncommon in such high-profile groups.

Initially, when they debuted on The X Factor and became Britain’s most popular band since The Beatles, the strong camaraderie among the five young, enthusiastic individuals played a significant role in the legendary status of One Direction that their fans embraced.

Yet, despite their public personas, the bond between Liam Payne (deceased at 31 this week), Harry Styles (30), Niall Horan (31), Zayn Malik (31), and Louis Tomlinson (32) was intricately complex in private.

Formed collectively by Simon Cowell and Nicole Scherzinger, this group was assembled primarily considering their appearance and performance skills, seemingly without much regard for how their individual personalities would mesh together.

Fervent fans speculated wildly about the close bond between the band members, going as far as to concoct an unusual conspiracy theory that Louis Tomlinson and Harry Styles were romantically involved – a theory they labeled “Larry Styles.

Ever since they took a break in 2016, leading to an ultimate separation as each member embarked on individual careers, all five of them have openly discussed the numerous disputes and conflicts that marked their shared journey.

It was unmistakably Zayn Malik’s exit that stood out, as he later expressed that the band members had developed a sense of tiredness towards one another following five years of concerts.

In simpler terms, Liam Payne shared a more somber perspective, disclosing an incident where one of his bandmates pushed him forcefully against a wall. He also mentioned that he and Louis Tomlinson had intense feelings of animosity towards each other during the early days, to the point where they nearly engaged in a physical altercation.

Despite only knowing each other for five years under these intense conditions, they formed an unbreakable connection that no outsider could fully grasp.

This week, his fellow band members honored Liam by calling him a “brother,” and they often spoke about standing together during their toughest moments.

In a candid post, Zayn Malik openly acknowledged that there were instances where he and Liam clashed, referring to their disagreements as “butting heads.” He also highlighted Liam’s strong-willed personality, describing him as someone who isn’t afraid to express his opinions and doesn’t tolerate disrespect from others.

His words demonstrated that, just like any close-knit family, there can often be a complex bond that fluctuates between affection and disagreement.

Liam on Zayn Malik: ‘I have many reasons to dislike him’ 

It’s quite evident that there were significant issues within One Direction, as cracks surfaced among them. The most notable event that exposed these fractures occurred when Zayn Malik, at the age of 22, stunned everyone worldwide in March 2015 by dramatically announcing his departure from the band, aiming to live a more ordinary life.

Initially, he stated that he was stepping down for the sake of living as an ordinary 22-year-old, enjoying some leisure time away from public attention.

Afterward, he agreed to a single artist deal with RCA Records for his musical career, and subtly criticized the band by stating it was now the right moment to create ‘authentic’ or ‘genuine’ music.

He wrote on Twitter: ‘I guess I never explained why I left, it was for this moment to be given the opportunity to show you who I really am! #realmusic #RCA !!’

Approximately a year following his departure from the boy band, Zayn confessed, “From the very first year, I believe I’ve always wanted to leave.

Throwing more shade he added: ‘I never really wanted to be there, like in the band. 

I tried it out since it was available then, but when I understood the path our music was taking, let’s say metaphorically speaking, I immediately recognized it didn’t suit me, as I found I couldn’t contribute to it.

During an interview with GQ in 2015, Liam mentioned that Zayn didn’t bid farewell when he departed from the group, which further intensified speculations among fans that his departure might not have been amicable.

In simpler terms, ‘Since Zayn left the group in his unique manner, we haven’t had much communication from him afterwards.’

‘He didn’t even say goodbye, if I am being honest. It was a really sordid scenario, from our side certainly. A bit strange. It’s difficult.’

A significant amount of time had passed since Zayn left the group, and they had already achieved record-breaking sales with over 20 million albums. Eventually, the remaining members of One Direction declared that they would be taking a prolonged break from their activities together.

Yet, as the years rolled by, it seemed increasingly unlikely that the band would reunite, with no clear indication of a get-together.

In the intervening years, awkwardness with Zayn and Liam persisted.  

Back in 2018, Liam posted tweets to Niall, Louis, and Harry after noticing that the hashtag “#OneDirectionBestFans” was trending globally, yet he neglected to include the band’s original member, Zayn.

In a tweet, he expressed his amazement by saying: “@NiallOfficial @Louis_Tomlinson @Harry_Styles, it’s hard to believe it’s been so long! A big thank you to you all – you’re absolutely incredible!

2022 saw Liam highlighting the significant strain that developed among the members of One Direction, as he disclosed an instance where he had a violent argument with a fellow bandmate, though he chose not to reveal their identity.

On his Impaulsive podcast, Logan Paul mentioned that he’s recognized for being straightforward, yet this sometimes led to friction within the group.

He shared: ‘There was one moment where there was an argument backstage and one member in particular threw me up a wall.

I told him, “If you don’t take your hands away, there’s a strong chance you might lose their function permanently.

He went on to note his bandmate eventually removed his hands.

Earlier this month, Liam’s ex-fiancée Maya Henry, who dated the star on and off for four years, named the star who is alleged to have thrown him against a wall as Zayn Malik.

She made the revelation in response to a TikTok user who brought up the mystery and shared ‘You can’t convince me it wasn’t Louis’.

Maya, aged 23, expressed that she felt overwhelmed and couldn’t keep the information to herself anymore. She elaborated by stating that she constantly encounters this information in various places, has heard the same tiresome tale numerous times…apparently he told her it was Zayn, so.

During the same podcast, when queried about Zayn, Liam touched upon a social media post shared by Zayn’s former girlfriend, Gigi Hadid.

He commented, “She once tweeted about finding a respectful partner. That sentiment doesn’t seem as timely now.

The comment was interpreted by fans as a reference to an allegation made by Gigi’s mother Yolanda Hadid that Zayn had shoved her into a dresser and called her a ‘f***ing Dutch sl*t’.

In the lengthy rant, Liam said that in spite of his ‘dislike’ of Zayn, he tried to be empathetic because of the Bradford-born singer’s upbringing.  

He said: ‘There’s many reasons why I dislike Zayn and there’s many reasons why I’ll always, always be on his side.

If I had been in the position he was, experiencing his journey and all that came with it. By the way, how about we talk about your upbringing? Was your family particularly nurturing and encouraging?

My parents are extremely supportive, sometimes to a degree that can be irritating, and they’re okay with me expressing that. On the other hand, Zayn grew up differently in terms of parental support.

He continued: ‘You can always look at the man for where he is and say, ‘Oh, yeah, whatever that guy’s a d**k.’ Right?

However, upon considering his journey and whether he truly desired to be in that position, I find myself more confused about my own actions and purpose than ever before. It seems I cannot pass judgment on him due to certain circumstances.

Despite seemingly expressing empathy towards Zayn and seeming concern for him as an ex-One Direction member, his remarks sparked a massive wave of criticism from his fans.

In July 2023, Liam publicly apologized to Zayn via a YouTube video, acknowledging that he had discussed Zayn on his podcast. This apology came after Liam had completed a 100-day stay at a rehab center located in Louisiana.

Sharing that he was six months sober, Liam posted to his YouTube channel with the tag: ‘I’m back.’ 

In the video, he confessed that he stepped away from public view for the sake of his mental health, stating: “I almost felt like I wasn’t myself anymore, and I’m certain you all noticed it too. To be honest, I was struggling quite a bit before that point, but I was genuinely pleased to take a break and pause my life and work.

In the eight-minute video, Liam addressed the comments he’d made about Zayn in the podcast.

Liam admitted, “Much of what I said earlier seemed to come from an unhealthy source. In my anger over the circumstances, I lashed out rather than examining myself. I’d like to extend an apology for my actions.

It appeared as if he implied that he had made amends with Zayn, mentioning that all of his One Direction bandmates stood by him during his recovery period in rehab.

He declared that the other boys had been incredibly supportive towards him. When I was in a tough spot, they stepped up and helped out significantly, including Zayn too.

Prior to his passing, it seemed that Liam had a cordial relationship with both Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan. Additionally, he had managed to reconcile with Harry Styles following a prolonged period of no communication between them.

Back in June 2023, it seemed like things were looking up in Liam’s relationship with Zayn, as evidenced by his comment on Zayn’s Instagram post hinting at new music. He wrote: “Sounds huge already!

Zayn replied, saying: ‘Appreciate it bro, thanks for the love.’

His untimely demise prematurely ended their opportunity to fully restore their friendship, as Zayn eloquently expressed in his tribute to Liam when he stated that he had thought they would share ‘many more heart-to-hearts’ in the time ahead.

After spending five years side by side, I can’t help but confess that the bond between us started to fray, as we found ourselves yearning for a little more space and independence.

Liam on Louis Tomlinson: ‘We absolutely hated each other’

In 2019, Liam admitted that he and Louis ‘hated’ each other when One Direction was first formed. 

He mentioned that during our time in the band, his age and my extensive singing experience seemed to place us in an unusual or awkward role, he explained.

‘He was wanting to be the leader and I was doing my thing and wanted to.

Initially, our relationship was far from amicable. In truth, we had a deep dislike for one another that was almost comical in its intensity. It wasn’t pretty. Yet, we managed to conceal this animosity quite effectively.

On Logan Paul’s podcast, Liam shared once more his account of having conflicts with Tomlinson during their time in the band, casually referring to him as “ruffian-like.

In a casual manner, Liam remarked, “Louis is quite free-spirited and enjoys living that way. That’s just who he is.” Despite this, they were once at odds within the band. However, their friendship has grown since then.

‘Like, come to blows hate each other, it was close.’ 

Based on my years of following and analyzing pop culture, I’ve learned that rumors often circulate quickly, especially when it comes to celebrity gossip. However, in this case, I find myself leaning towards the account given by Maya Henry, Liam’s ex-fiancee. Her close relationship with both Louis and Zayn, coupled with her firsthand knowledge of the situation, makes me think that her version of events is more reliable than fan speculation. It goes to show that we should always strive to gather our information from credible sources when trying to piece together the truth in such situations.

After their band disbanded, the duo grew particularly close. In March 2023, Liam attended the screening of Louis’ documentary titled “All Of Those Voices,” which delved into Tomlinson’s transformation from a One Direction member to carving out his own successful solo path.

In a public statement, he stood up for Liam against the criticism following his remarks about Zayn on the Logan Paul podcast. He expressed that being in the limelight can be “extremely mentally taxing” at times.

As a lifestyle expert, I’d put it this way: Logan Paul clearly understood the right levers to pull when goading Liam, aiming to elicit a response from him intentionally.

‘That’s what I took away from it. It just felt disrespectful. And they got so much out of it, as if he ain’t got enough already. I f***ing hate them Paul brothers. It just felt disrespectful, I’ll say.’

Following our magical escapade last night, I simply couldn’t help but pen down my thoughts. Witnessing life from your perspective was nothing short of breathtakingly captivating!

I’m incredibly grateful for your presence in my life, friend. I truly feel fortunate, and I believe you are well aware of this. However, it bears repeating: you were one of the precious few who quite literally rescued me when I needed it most.

‘You dragged me out of something so dark I’ve never shared it. But your approach is something I admire and aspire to so I can one day do the same.’ 

Liam on Harry Styles: ‘We just don’t have anything in common’

Liam Payne openly admitted that he wouldn’t know what to talk to Harry Styles about these days because they’ve grown so far apart.

During a 2019 chat with The Face magazine, I confess that I found myself drifting away from Harry as he metamorphosed into a standalone performer.

He mentioned: “It’s a real enigma who he has transformed into. The other day, I glanced at some photos of him, and all I could think was: ‘I’m not sure what else I’d say to him other than, ‘Hello’ and ‘How have you been?’

‘I mean, look at the stuff I put out, and the stuff Harry puts out. Polar opposite. I’m like the antichrist version of what Harry is.’ 

In an interview with Esquire that very year, I openly admitted that my relationship with Harry had always been on the distant side, as we hadn’t truly connected due to our lack of shared experiences.

I was completely unaware of who he was, and neither is anyone’s blame – it’s simply how things turned out when we found ourselves together in a situation where the spotlight of fame suddenly shone on us.

He mentioned that while they might converse or even exchange a humorous remark, their interactions were essentially about not having private, individual moments together.

He mentioned that our usual plans for the weekend, such as going out or spending time together, weren’t a part of our routine. It’s because we simply don’t share any common interests.

I hold no grudge towards the boy; I believe he’s an exceptionally kind-hearted individual, truly charming.

On the Diary of a CEO podcast in 2021, he offered a more positive evaluation of their bond, stating that his musical partner reached out to check on him during his battles with substance abuse.

‘I had a lovely phone call from Harry the other day. He was checking in on me,’ he said. ‘It’s almost as if some people have got a sixth sense about when you’re going through something and want to check-in.

“He’s very much like that. He’s a lovely, lovely boy. I love him to pieces.’

Liam on Niall Horan: ‘We need to talk’

‘I feel like I know where I stand with Niall,’ he told The Face magazine. 

Lately, Liam joined forces with Niall once more, when they both were at Niall’s concert in Argentina. Accompanied by his girlfriend, Kate Cassidy, Liam was part of the audience.

In one backstage snap, Liam and the Irish singer, 31, seemed in high spirits as they posed for a selfie together and Liam captioned the snap with: ‘Reunited’.

A former member of One Direction, who recently passed away, also expressed his backing for a friend by posting multiple clips and photos of the friend’s on-stage performances in front of thousands of enthusiastic fans.

He captioned them with: ‘So happy I got to see Niall in concert (love heart emoji).’

According to a source, when Liam went to Niall’s performance recently, he felt an impulse to express his pride in Niall sincerely.

Initially, they got an opportunity to spend some quality time together. Eventually, all that remained was a deep-seated affection for each other.

‘Niall was so grateful for him coming to support him and his music,’ they added.

‘Their bond was unbreakable at the end and their friendship ended on a good note, so to speak.’

Before jetting off to Argentina, I couldn’t help but share a cryptic message on my socials, suggesting there’s still some lingering matters between me and Niall that need addressing.

He mentioned that they might pop by for a visit, as it’s been some time since he last spoke with Niall. There are several topics they need to discuss, and he also wants to clear up a few matters with him.

‘No bad vibes or anything like that. But just … we need to talk.’
