The Bene Gesserit wage a “war hidden in plain sight” in epic new Dune: Prophecy trailer

As a seasoned gamer who’s spent countless hours immersed in the vast universes of sci-fi and fantasy, I can confidently say that the latest trailer for Dune: Prophecy has me absolutely hooked! The intrigue, the mystery, the breathtaking visuals – it’s a feast for the eyes and mind.

At New York Comic-Con today, HBO unveiled an exciting new trailer for the spinoff series titled “Dune: Prophecy“, which is part of their successful Dune film franchise directed by Denis Villeneuve. Just as the Harkonnens distribute spice generously, the studio has graciously made this trailer available online for everyone to enjoy and be amazed.

I’m really hyping up this trailer, but to be honest, it seems quite warranted. This sneak peek offers our most detailed glimpse yet at the upcoming movie Dune: Prophecy. And let me tell you, it looks absolutely stunning. Give it a watch below, and we can discuss its implications afterwards.

Dune: Prophecy trailer establishes the major players for the series

To date, Villeneuve has directed two “Dune” movies that collectively cover Frank Herbert’s influential 1965 novel. As Villeneuve works on the third and final film of the series, a TV show titled “Dune: Prophecy” is being launched to keep “Dune” enthusiasts eager for more content. “Dune: Prophecy”, set over 10,000 years prior to “Dune”, delves into an intriguing part of Herbert’s fictional cosmos. At this time, factions like the Imperium and the Bene Gesserit are just beginning to establish themselves following a devastating war against artificial intelligence, known in the books as the Butlerian Jihad.

The initial phases of the Bene Gesserit are detailed in the novel “Sisterhood of Dune,” penned by Brian Herbert, Herbert’s son, and Kevin J. Anderson as co-author. The narrative of “Dune: Prophecy” unfolds approximately three decades following that book, allowing it ample space to weave its unique tale without encroaching upon the original source content.

The trailer introduces several key characters who will appear on-screen, such as Mark Strong portraying Emperor Javicco Corrino, Jodhi May as Empress Natalya Corrino, Emily Watson in the role of Valya Harkonnen, Olivia Williams as Tula Harkonnen, and Travis Fimmel as Desmond Hart. Notably, Valya had a significant part in Sisterhood of Dune, where she joined the Sisterhood of the Bene Gesserit as a young girl.

Currently, Valya and her sister Tula lead a space witch cult known as The Sisterhood. As the trailer begins, their voices echo, “We attract women from various planets to further our kind…and shape the destiny that lies ahead.” For those familiar with Dune, the Bene Gesserit are already powerful by the time of the story, ruling over the Imperium through subtle manipulation of the great houses. However, in the era of Dune: Prophecy, they have not yet attained such control. Throughout the series, it seems likely that we’ll witness them gradually gaining power.

Who is Desmond Hart in Dune: Prophecy?

To achieve their goal, they must somehow gain an advantage over Emperor Javicco Corrino, who is in a precarious position surrounded by scheming advisors at court. As Javicco struggles to maintain his power, the enigmatic Desmond Hart proposes an alliance against the Bene Gesserit. He warns that a covert war is underway, and he alone can expose the truth to the Emperor. Moreover, Desmond claims to have received extraordinary powers to eliminate the Sisterhood from the Imperium’s worlds. Since I haven’t encountered this character in the books yet, I am eagerly anticipating learning more about his role and how he fits into the broader storyline.

A few other takeaways: The sets and effects in this trailer look gorgeous; I gasped out loud at the shot of a sandworm on Arrakis swallowing an entire castle. We also see plenty of instances of Bene Gesserit sisters like Valya Harkonnen using the Voice to command others to do their bidding. I love the bit where she says “I run a school for young women, we’re not a threat to anyone,” as the scene cuts to her slicing open someone’s throat. And of course, shout out to the fact that the trailer begins with a Bene Gesserit Voice shouting “Watch now!” Chills, chills all around.

Another intriguing aspect of the Dune: Prophecy trailer lies in its blurring of lines between good and evil characters. While the Bene Gesserit seem formidable, the series synopsis suggests they are working towards safeguarding humanity’s future. However, given the enigmatic nature of the Bene Gesserit in Dune, it’s safe to expect that their intentions might not be as straightforward as they appear. This suggests a complex moral landscape for the upcoming series.

The ensemble cast also features Sarah-Sofie Boussnina, Josh Heuston, Chloe Lea, Jade Anouka, Faoileann Cunningham, Edward Davis, Aoife Hinds, Chris Mason, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Camilla Beeput, Jihae, Tabu, Charithra Chandran, Jessica Barden, Emma Canning, and Yerin Ha.

The initial season of Dune: Prophecy is set to span over six episodes. This series kicks off on November 17th, airing at 9:00 p.m. in both Eastern Time (ET) and Pacific Time (PT), on HBO and Max.
