Sophie Skelton (Briana) remembers the emotional final day on the Outlander set

As a gamer who has been following Outlander since its inception, I can say it feels like bidding farewell to an old friend. It’s been part of my weekly routine for 10 years, and I’ve grown attached to these characters as if they were my own family. The news that the final season is on its way is bittersweet; I’m excited to see how it all wraps up, but I’ll surely miss the adventures of Jamie and Claire.

The last season of the popular series “Outlander” was recently filmed, and the cast is still feeling the impact. As Sophie Skelton (who plays Brianna) shared with TV Insider, it’s been affecting them in waves at different moments. She compared it to experiencing the five stages of grief.

It’s been 10 years of people’s lives, so whether it’s for your character or for your job or for you as a person, there’s so much that we’ve all gone through and had it come in and out of our lives. And so I think everyone’s just been dealing with it in different ways.

Several cast members from Starz’s time-traveling romance series anticipated addressing its conclusion much sooner. According to Skelton, there was a point where everyone believed that the show could have ended with its seventh season. “We had a taste of what it might be like to conclude before we even reached Season 8,” she stated.

Starz has chosen to extend Outlander for another season, which is great news as it means we won’t have to say goodbye after just seven seasons. Prolonging the storyline beyond the seventh book, An Echo in the Bone, allows for a more comprehensive exploration of the eighth book, Written in My Own Heart’s Blood. However, it seems unlikely they’ll cover all of author Diana Gabaldon’s series, as the tenth and final book hasn’t been published yet.

Regardless of whether you’ve read the books or not, the series finale is certain to be a moving experience for everyone involved. The actors themselves have admitted to shedding tears during filming, which may have caught them off guard. It seems that as they witnessed their loved ones on set breaking down, emotions ran high, and the shared feelings of loss were palpable. This was particularly poignant given the decade-long journey they’ve been through in making this series.

It seems unusual that Skelton is discussing the filming of Season 8’s finale, as we haven’t even seen the second half of Season 7 yet; new episodes will start airing on Starz from November 22. Afterward, we’ll enter a period of waiting for the eighth and final season. Skelton jokingly hinted that perhaps during the press tour for Season 8, we might all be seen shedding tears.

For the past decade, Starz has greatly benefited from the success of Outlander, and they’re not ready to let go just yet. They are currently developing a prequel series for Outlander, which will delve into the lives of Jamie and Claire’s parents and their love story that mirrors that of their children in years to come. This new show is expected to air between seasons seven and eight of Outlander, ensuring fans can continue enjoying this world even after the final episode of the original series.
