Grotesquerie episode 7 recap: Sister Megan exposed and a twist ending

As a fan who’s been hooked since the very first episode of Grotesquerie, I can confidently say that this show never ceases to surprise me! Last week’s cliffhanger had us all on the edge of our seats, and this week was no exception.

As a gamer, I’ve been hooked on the mystery unfolding in FX’s Grotesquerie. Last week, we thought we might’ve unmasked the serial killer, but the case isn’t closed just yet. The ending of episode 6 left us hanging with Lois revealing a possible suspect, but it could be a red herring. It seemed like Father Charlie was the man behind the mask, but is it really that simple?

WARNING: Major spoilers for Grotesquerie episode 7 are below.

In the seventh installment of Grotesquerie, the scene initiates with an unexpected discussion as Lois joins Merritt and Eddie for dinner. They reveal their newfound love and plans to cohabit, along with Merritt’s recent casting in a play. Things appear to be going smoothly for Merritt, but Lois soon becomes troubled. Initially, Lois expresses her happiness at being informed, but quickly becomes agitated. She confides in her daughter that she and Eddie had a past romantic involvement, which she describes as “a not so pleasant affair.” Eddie disputes this claim, attributing her revelation to intoxication, while Merritt urges her mother to cease the discussion.

However, Lois persists in conveying to Merritt that her father had been involved romantically with his students. She labels both Merritt and Eddie as feeble, following which Eddie suggests they will escort her to a rehabilitation center. Yet, Lois refuses their assistance and departs angrily.

In a later turn of events, Lois encounters a doctor at the hospital and informs them that she has chosen to discontinue life support for Marshall, revealing his infidelity with Nurse Redd as the reason. Just then, Nurse Redd walks in, curious about the commotion, leading to an argument between the two women. Eventually, it’s revealed that Nurse Redd is one of those who will carry out disconnecting the life support, and she voices her distress over the situation to Lois beforehand in a nearby hallway.

Is Father Charlie really Grotesquerie? I don’t think so

Lois visits Father Charlie’s place, casually exploring various spaces. In one room, she discovers an unusual book filled with texts, sketches, and news articles. However, before she can delve deeper into this find, the governor contacts her to praise her for resolving the case. Yet, Lois appears uncertain about having truly solved it.

Sister Megan is now alert and in good health, and she’s being praised for her news reports that made headlines across the nation. It seems that her stories have encouraged people to return to church, which is fantastic for her personally. Church members, however, express disdain towards Father Charlie, referring to him as “evil.” Despite this widespread sentiment, I must admit there’s a degree of ambiguity in my mind about Father Charlie. Sister Megan voices her requests — additional funds for the newspaper — before departing.

In a meeting, Lois shares with Detective Hanover that she initially planned to step down once the ongoing case was concluded. However, she’s revealed her thoughts have shifted since then. It comes as a shock to her when Detective Hanover informs her that she doesn’t actually have the option to retire.

On a given evening, Sister Megan drops by Lois’ house for a meal, and their conversation veers towards the ongoing case. It gradually transpires that Lois harbors doubts about the details surrounding Sister Megan’s shooting, suggesting the assailant intended to harm but not fatally injure her. As the questions flow, Lois senses there are aspects Sister Megan hasn’t disclosed. The puzzle in Lois’ mind is how Sister Megan managed to stay one move ahead. Lois begins to suspect Father Charlie had an accomplice and levels accusations at Sister Megan, implying she might have been working with him.

In response, Sister Megan shouts angrily at Lois and lunges towards her brandishing a knife. A violent altercation ensues within the house, culminating in Sister Megan fatally wounding Lois with the knife. In retaliation, Lois pours scalding water onto Sister Megan. As Sister Megan reaches for her gun, Lois collapses. Exhausted but not done, Sister Megan drags Lois and continues to attack her with repeated stabs.

Grotesquerie episode 7 ending explained

In the subsequent scene, we find Marshall, Eddie, and Merritt back at the restaurant from earlier in the episode, but it’s evident this is a different timeline. Eddie and Merritt now appear changed, and they inform Marshall that they are divorcing. Eddie expresses his gratitude for being included in Merritt’s family, yet there seems to be no sign of Lois. Intriguingly, Eddie speaks of Lois in the past, while Merritt discloses to her father that Eddie and Lois have been involved romantically over the past two years. Wow!

In a different perspective, it’s Lois who has been driven to the hospital by Marshall, as she lies in a coma. Has Lois truly been unconscious throughout this entire period, experiencing dreams or illusions of the events portrayed on the show? Or was it Sister Megan’s attack that induced the coma in Lois? Could there be some possibility that it is a combination of all these scenarios? With Grotesquerie introducing a significant twist, we find ourselves with more questions than answers!

In episode 7, Marshall chooses to discontinue life support for Lois, requesting that the procedure be done tomorrow instead. As he prepares to leave, Marshall says a fond goodnight to Lois.

Since there’s no new episode of “Grotesquerie” airing tonight, don’t forget to catch up with the series next Wednesday, October 23rd. You can find it on FX channels or watch it the following day on Hulu.
