Michelle Visage reflects on her open marriage with author David Case as she reveals the brutal way her ex ended their four-year relationship

I have always admired Michelle Visage‘s journey and resilience. Her life story is a testament to the power of self-love, determination, and the transformative impact of representation. As a producer of RuPaul’s Drag Race, she has not only brought joy and entertainment to millions but also provided a beacon of hope for countless young people struggling with their identities.

Michelle Visage discusses her honest approach to marriage with writer David Case, sharing candidly about the painful manner in which their four-year union came to an end.

Previously known as a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing, the 55-year-old individual, who shares two daughters with her partner David, expressed that their unique, non-traditional approach to marriage contributes significantly to their strength.

On the Origins with Cush Jumbo podcast, she admitted that at age 21, she believed she had met her soulmate, only to have the relationship end via a phone call.

After a summer filled with fun and carefree moments, I stumbled upon my life companion, David, in the serene expanse of Central Park. We exchanged vows and embarked on our journey together in the year 1997.

As a lifestyle expert, I’d rephrase Michelle’s statement as follows: “In our shared endeavors at drag cons, my spouse is always by my side. Not only is he a frequent companion at these events, but let me clarify, he’s quite an attractive man. It seems that this fact has not gone unnoticed among the gay community.

Cush added: ‘I can imagine they don’t mind David showing up.’

She quipped: ‘So he beams with pride. He’s got that thing down. I think you call it compersion.

‘We lead an open life, so he can feel at ease knowing my joy is unconcealed. Whatever actions I take, whether they’re sexual or not, I’m unsure if I possess the feeling of compersion to be genuinely thrilled about his activities with another woman, but I acknowledge that it exists within me. He is confident that I do hold such feelings.’

Cush expressed it as, ‘It provides a chance for you to express every aspect of who you are without the need for concealment.’

Michelle, with a residence in Belsize Park, London, which she uses during her trips to the UK, concluded: “We never do, not even him. At times it stings, but that’s what adds strength to our bond.

‘Openness in how we conduct our daily lives, which can be optional at times.’

“Basically, we don’t take any action. Instead, we have the capacity to act as needed. That’s our approach.

Prior to her relationship with David, Michele was betrothed to a handsome man from Antigua, and she confessed that she believed they would have had attractive children together.

She informed the talk-show host, “He was from Antigua and the Philippines, but I was still quite young at the time. I was 21 years old. Our children would have been exceptionally beautiful.

As I’ve grown and experienced more, I came to understand that he was truly an exceptional person. At the age of 21, however, I wasn’t quite ready yet. I needed to explore and live my own journey first.

‘So when I met David, I was 26. I got married at 27. Still young.

However, let me clarify. We’ve been connected for a staggering 28 years, and it all started in New York City, Central Park. At that time, I was freshly out of a relationship that felt like the epitome of love, but unfortunately, he left me shattered.

‘He broke up with me on the phone after four and a half years.’

Michelle has won three Primetime Emmy Awards as a producer of RuPaul’s Drag Race. 

As a lifestyle expert, I wholeheartedly appreciate the transformative influence this show holds in shaping young lives today. Reflecting on my own journey, I can confidently say that, given such resources, I likely wouldn’t have faced as many struggles as I did when growing up.

Michelle, known for her role as a judge, expressed: “Isn’t it better to spend our time here amidst light rather than darkness? Light eliminates darkness, and we must persist in this positive spirit.

If RuPaul’s Drag Race had been around when I was growing up, I believe it would have provided me with a sense of acceptance and understanding that might have helped me navigate my struggles with self-identity and body image. Although I am not part of the LGBTQ+ community, I can relate to the challenges I faced in accepting myself as a cisgender, mostly heteronormative individual. To this day, I continue to grapple with these issues.

‘But I’m at the point now where I’m learning all about self-love through therapy. 

‘I can’t do it alone. It takes a lot of work.

Preparing for the demise of your former self and welcoming the emergence of a new one can be quite challenging, indeed.

Television shows such as Drag Race are more than just children donning colorful attire. They offer a platform for self-expression and creativity.

The focus is on perseverance, tenacity, compassion, resilience, ambition, affection, benevolence, and the influence of one’s speech on these children.

In various accounts, I often find myself relating as a parent of a child with autism, whether it’s within our local community or broader society.

This child has faced numerous challenges, and I believe many parents may struggle to empathize with them, leading to feelings of confusion about how to respond. Often, this lack of understanding can unconsciously affect the parent-child relationship, making it difficult for parents to know how to handle these situations.

Instead, rather than trying to comprehend them or grieving over the children you imagined and instead embracing and accepting them as they are now, everything can shift. I believe some parents may continue to question themselves or worry that there’s something amiss with the child, still self-blaming.

Michelle was also a contestant on the British reality shows Celebrity Big Brother in 2015.

On the program, Michelle made an impressive mark from the very beginning, eventually placing fifth overall.

In the 1980s, a judge for Drag Race emerged into the spotlight in the U.S., initially as a member of the girl band Seduction. During the 2010s, she gained broader popularity when she became a judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race.

However, upon moving to the United Kingdom in 2019, Visage, who humorously claimed to have been ‘a gay British man’ in past lives, discovered a fresh audience. This led to participation in Channel 5’s Celebrity Big Brother UK, where Visage stayed for an entire month.

Four years following this, she gained immediate popularity when she walked the Strictly stage alongside Giovanni Pernice in 2019, having previously made a memorable appearance on The Only Way is Essex. During that time, she left her good friend Bobby Norris quite taken aback.

Launching Drag Race UK placed her among greats like Graham Norton and Alan Carr, making her feel like an honorary British icon to the public eye.

Michelle, previously employed as a radio host for CBS, transitioned to serving as an in-house judge on Drag Race. Subsequently, she garnered even more admirers on Radio 2.
