LeBron James on Bronny’s best play from cardiac arrest return: ‘He walked off on his own’
As a fan who has witnessed the remarkable journey of LeBron James and his family, I can’t help but feel a deep sense of admiration and respect for their resilience and unwavering love for the game. The story of Bronny James’ return to the basketball court after a life-threatening incident is not just a testament to his talent, but also to the strength of his character and the support system that surrounds him.
LeBron James wasn’t on the court for one of the most significant games for him last season.
It wasn’t a Lakers game or even an NBA game.
On December 10th, there was a match-up between USC and Long Beach State. In this game, LeBron James’ eldest son, Bronny, played his first college game for the Trojans, just under five months after experiencing a sudden heart attack.
In an interview for “Starting 5” on Netflix, LeBron James expressed that each minute he ran or jumped resulted in a chest bump. It’s clear he was feeling extremely anxious about it all. The play he found most impressive during the entire game, though, wasn’t any specific move but rather when the game ended and he independently walked off the court on his own strength.
Now, LeBron James and his son, Bronny James, share a team in the Lakers, as they were drafted together by Los Angeles during the 55th overall pick in June’s draft.
Approximately a year ago, during a training session with the Trojans on July 25, Bronny James fell to the ground at the Galen Center. Later, it was revealed that his sudden cardiac arrest was likely due to a significant congenital heart defect, both structurally and functionally abnormal.

James referred to the time after the event as “a challenging few months, observing our son experience his personal struggles. To be honest, it impacted everyone in our home.
Savannah James, who is both his wife and Bronny’s mom, became emotional as she reminisced about a particular moment during “Starting 5.
She remarked, ‘It was quite challenging,’ but added, ‘Perhaps our perspectives varied. In essence, it boiled down to standing together and expressing immense gratitude for the final result.’
Title “The Gathering Five” introduces you to the 2023-24 seasons of James and four other NBA standouts – Jimmy Butler from the Miami Heat, Anthony Edwards with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Domantas Sabonis playing for the Sacramento Kings, and Jayson Tatum representing the Boston Celtics.
One episode devotes a substantial part to Bronny James’ debut game with USC. Prior to this, LeBron James had assisted the Lakers in clinching the NBA’s first in-season tournament title in Las Vegas against the Indiana Pacers (123-109). Right after the victory, LeBron stated that he hopped on a flight to be present for his son’s game.
“I know he had to be nervous as hell ‘cause I was nervous as hell,” LeBron James said.
In the docuseries, Bronny James commented: “I had quite a few nervous feelings, but that’s normal. Before every match, I tend to feel the same way.
In the overtime game where the Trojans fell short by five points (84-79), the rookie guard managed to score four points, grab three rebounds, provide two assists, and make two steals, also recording one block in his 16 minutes on the court. This loss seemed like an incredible win for the James family.
Speaking with emotion, LeBron James expressed, “It’s wonderful to watch my child pursue and fulfill his dreams. But what truly moves me is witnessing him face challenges and emerge victorious. You see, the last time he played basketball was when he was taken off the court on a stretcher and rushed to the hospital.
