Outer Banks season 4 premiere recap: ‘The Enduro’
As a longtime resident of the Outer Banks and a die-hard fan of this wild bunch since day one, I must say that season 4 has me hooked! The Pogues are back, and they’re in deep water this time around.
Get ready for the grand finale, Pogues! The long-awaited fourth season of Outer Banks will officially premiere on Thursday, October 10, 2024, starting with the first five episodes.
In “The Enduro,” the opening episode of Outer Banks’ fourth season, we find ourselves right in between the happenings of the third season finale. Keep in mind that there was a time leap at the end of season 3. Essentially, the start of Outer Banks season 4 serves to bridge those gaps.
After returning from South America on a shared ride, The Pogues reconcile with family following their discovery of the legendary gold at El Dorado. Regrettably, Big John (Charles Halford) and Ward Cameron (Charles Esten) didn’t make it back. Despite some lingering tension among them, the $1.1 million worth of gold found in Sarah’s (Madelyn Cline) and John B’s (Chase Stokes) backpack from the ancient city offers a new beginning for everyone.
The Pogues build Poguelandia 2.0
Instead of going separate ways with their earnings and setting up individual homes, Pope (Jonathan Daviss) proposes a unique solution: starting a business on the water where they can reside as well. Consequently, they decide to establish a surf shop that offers bait, tackle, and deep-sea fishing charters led by JJ (Rudy Pankow). They plan to live at JJ’s house initially; however, their first task is to reclaim the property from the bank. This requires them to outbid the most influential individuals in the Outer Banks during an auction, which doesn’t go smoothly for them.
Initially, Pope had a strategy in mind, but things took an unexpected turn when JJ took charge. The goal was to set aside funds for building projects, but Dale – a swanky real estate agent from town – inflated the property cost close to $800,000, which is nearly all of their gold-derived savings. This excessive spending on Pogulandia 2.0, as Pope sees it, was far beyond reasonable.
In a style that would surely please Zack Snyder, a series of scenes unfolds where The Pogues construct a dock for fishing supplies, establish their surf store, renovate the Maybank residence, cultivate a garden, and take on numerous other projects. Eventually, they’re all set to start operations and welcome customers.
In Outer Banks thus far, it seems that JJ appears to be his happiest yet. It’s truly heartening to witness him finding a place he can call home, as Kiara (played by Madison Bailey) points out.
Not long after, the Pogues attract their initial clients. A handful of fishermen make a pit stop at the fishing gear store. Business is booming for the Pogues, despite JJ’s ill-fated choice, but it’s clear that this won’t continue indefinitely.
According to John B, we possessed all necessary items, but unbeknownst to us, things never remain stationary. There were some ominous truths concealed within the marsh, he added.
Boom. Here comes the mystery!
Lightner threatens the Pogues
A mysterious man, known as Lightner (Rigo Sanchez) comes to the bait and tackle shop asking questions. He asks if they’re the treasure-hunting kids, and Kiara says, “Not anymore.” Then, he steals a pocket knife and leaves in his boat.
That night, a storm knocks out power at the dock. It’s an ominous warning!
Rafe spreads Ward’s ashes in the ocean
As I stepped onto the deck of our boat off the Outer Banks shoreline in season 4, I found myself standing beside my partner, Sofia, as we paid our respects to Ward and scattered his ashes. It was a poignant moment, honoring the memory of my father on the very waters where he once sailed.
From the memories of season 3, she’s the one you won’t forget! I believe she’d be a great fit for Rafe. It’s still up in the air, but considering she’s a Pogue, we can’t help but root for her, as we’re big fans of the Pogues.
JJ gambles away the last of the gold
The accountant, as he scrutinizes the figures, comes to understand that the business isn’t thriving as expected. With no more funds available, they have decided to hold onto their remaining gold to cover this year’s property tax expenses.
Isn’t it astonishing how they could spend so much money so swiftly? I’m not an entrepreneur, but even I find that hard to believe. Yet, when it comes to the Pogues, anything is possible!
In a bid to turn things around, JJ decides to secretly take the remaining gold. He puts all his money on himself at The Kildare Enduro, a high-stakes motorcycle race held on the beach. Just moments before the race begins, he confides in John B about this move. Now, it’s up to John B to participate in the race to shield JJ from troublemakers Rafe and Topper (Austin North).
“Nothing to lose?” JJ asks John B.
“No, we’ve got everything to lose this time,” John B replies.
In the competition, Rafe maintains a significant lead throughout most of the event, while JJ trails behind. Suddenly, JJ surges forward, leaving the rest of the competitors in his wake, though I’m unsure if this is allowed. At the end, it’s a close call between JJ and Rafe, but unfortunately, Rafe collides with JJ, causing him to tumble and obstruct John B. Topper. In the end, Topper manages to bypass them both and crosses the finish line first.
After losing, JJ even blames John B for losing. It’s very not good.
Later on, John B informs Pope that JJ squandered the funds intended for property taxes through gambling. There’s quite a commotion at Poguelandia now. Cleo (Carlacia Grant) presses Pope to disclose the severity of the situation, and it indeed is severe.
Then, their luck changes.
The Pogues become local heroes
In a turn of events, scientists discover El Dorado as previously sung by The Pogues, validating their tale. This extraordinary find earns them recognition in town. We skim through the scene where Wes Genrette (David Jensen) addresses The Pogues and extends an invitation to his Goat Island residence.
In this setting, The Pogues make a stop at Wes’ island, where they run into Demp (Nate Bynum) – the caretaker, and Chandler Groff (J. Anthony Crane), who is Wes’ son-in-law. And with that encounter, the episode comes to an end!
In simple terms, the opening episode provides a comprehensive update on the Pogues’ recent activities. It essentially sets the stage for their encounter with Wes at the conclusion of Outer Banks season 3, where he presents them with the chance to locate Blackbeard’s hidden treasure.
In this upcoming episode of “Outer Banks” season 4, we’ll uncover exactly what tasks Wes expects from them, gauge how near he is to unearthing the treasure, and understand its implications for the Pogues.
