LoL devs prop up Swain’s “extremely popular” role swap with buffs to support play

LoL devs prop up Swain’s “extremely popular” role swap with buffs to support play

As a long-time League of Legends player with countless hours spent in the Nexus, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation at the prospect of Swain buffs coming our way! The Grand General has been a staple in my bot lane strategy for quite some time now, and his dominance is well-deserved.

As the League of Legends (LoL) season progresses, the Noxian Grand General is receiving enhancements (buffs) to strengthen his performance in the bottom lane, despite consistently prevailing in this role already.

In the upcoming Season 14, the League of Legends balance team aims to address several key issues (or challenges) concerning Swain, primarily enhancing his abilities in the bottom lane and improving his overall strength. This is achieved by providing additional power or advantages to Swain, with a primary emphasis on the bot lane adjustments.

On Monday, David “Phreak” Turley, former commentator turned balance expert, disclosed upcoming League of Legends champion adjustments, including potential improvements for Swain in the mid lane. Although these alterations are subject to change during internal testing, significant modifications are planned for Swain’s E and Ultimate skills, while smaller tweaks will be made to his base stats, scaling, Q, and W abilities as Riot Games aims to enhance the playability of their “highly favored” character.

For Swain’s E skill, Nevermove, the adjustments will primarily target its damage and significantly speed up both the initial and subsequent casts of the ability. Meanwhile, his Ultimate, Demonic Ascension, will see a higher frequency of using the damaging Demonflare power, along with Riot augmenting more energy into the soulfire nova effect.

Phreak outlined their primary objective as enhancing both mid and bot lane player satisfaction with Swain. Since they don’t have a win rate budget, the focus is on finding suitable trade-offs to improve Swain’s playability without boosting his win rate excessively. The aim is to make Swain feel fantastic and gain popularity among players. Additionally, they plan to offer some focused win rate support to Swain as a support pick. Ultimately, their goal is to ensure that all the players who predominantly play Swain enjoy using him.

By the close of this year, a refreshed take on Swain will be designed with an emphasis on making him more enjoyable to play, rather than necessarily improving his win rate. (LoL balance chief’s statement)

Swain buffs will be power-level balancing act

Without much wiggle room for improvement in terms of win rates, Swain is quite formidable. According to U.GG, a popular League of Legends statistics website, Swain, the Noxian Grand General, ranks second among all champions when played in the bot lane, boasting an impressive 53.53% win rate. He maintains nearly the same winning percentage in the mid lane, securing victory about 52.35% of the time. Interestingly, he only shows up in support roles for just 1.2% of games played.

In the discussion, it was mentioned that Swain frequently emerges victorious in both mid lane and bot lane; however, he expresses discomfort while playing these positions. Phreak further explained that finding a balance between how frequently Swain wins and how enjoyable he is to play has turned into something of a challenging paradox, or as Phreak put it, “a bit of a catch-22.

Addressing this issue is likely to be the most significant hurdle Riot Games faces. It’s uncertain whether adjustments will be implemented in time for League of Legends Patch 14.21, as delays are possible – improvements might not even occur until Season 15 commences.

Nothing’s been added to the LoL PBE for testing yet either. This Xpsp writer confirmed Swain’s last change there is still his Demonic Ascension bugfixes.
