All 5 found footage videos of V/H/S/Beyond explained
As a seasoned horror aficionado who’s seen more ghostly apparitions than most people have breakfasts, I must say that “Stowaway” from V/H/S/Beyond truly stood out for me. The blend of fear, curiosity, and the unknown in this found footage video was simply captivating.
Ever since its debut in 2012, based on an idea by Brad Miska, the V/H/S movie series has been a beloved choice among horror enthusiasts, offering a diverse collection of found-footage short stories presented as tapes. Over time, each installment has incorporated unique themes, and this trend continues with the seventh and most recent film, V/H/S/Beyond. If you’re into sci-fi horror, then this one is for you! This time, the focus is on extraterrestrial creatures.
Across the seven movies – along with the two spinoffs! – not every tape is sensational, but there are numerous standout hidden treasures that make them worth watching. It’s astounding to think a series with this many installments could still be successful, but I was genuinely impressed by V/H/S/Beyond and had an enjoyable viewing experience overall. An anthology series can often be challenging to execute effectively, but this one manages it well. We’ve analyzed the five tapes in V/H/S/Beyond below, providing details about what transpires in each story and how they conclude.
WARNING: Major spoilers for V/H/S/Beyond to follow.
1. “Stork”
In the opening sequence of the film V/H/S/Beyond, we encounter a grisly spectacle as law enforcement officers delve into the mysteries behind a series of baby abductions, leading them to a residence inhabited by grotesque beings that appear to be extraterrestrial zombies. Given the movie’s premise, it’s reasonable to assume these monstrosities are from outer space. As the officers battle for survival while navigating through the house in search of the stolen infants, they uncover more about these unsettling creatures. In due course, they stumble upon a massive bird-alien hybrid (referred to as the stork) that consumes one of the officer’s brains and regurgitates it into the mouth of one of the missing babies. Quite disturbing indeed!
2. “Dream Girl”
The subsequent video chronicles photographers in Mumbai, India, who pursue a rumor about actress Tara from Bollywood. One of them harbors resentment towards celebrities due to past unsuccessful stardom aspirations, while another appears thrilled at the prospect of encountering the star. They manage to gain access to a film set and clandestinely invade Tara’s trailer in an attempt to capture exclusive footage. However, one of the photographers develops empathy for Tara upon overhearing her manager’s harsh words.
3. “Live and Let Dive”
One of my preferred videos in V/H/S/Beyond is “Live and Let Dive,” which showcases a harrowing situation where an alien spacecraft collides with an aircraft carrying a group of skydiving enthusiasts. Unfortunate events escalate as the plane’s occupants are forced to exit prematurely, leaving them to cope in the water. Tragically, some perish in the crash, while the survivors gather on land, only to be pursued and menaced by the extraterrestrial invaders.
4. “Fur Babies”
In the anthology film V/H/S/Beyond, the video titled “Fur Babies” stands out as it has no clear extraterrestrial link. Instead, it revolves around a peculiar doggy daycare owner named Becky, who gives off an unsettling vibe. Two individuals from an animal welfare organization visit her home under false pretenses of considering pet boarding. Although Becky’s emotional narration about her past dogs may tug at heartstrings, it still leaves her visitors feeling uneasy. However, it isn’t until they venture down to the basement that the true nature of Becky’s sinister intentions is revealed.
As it turns out, Becky has been holding people captive in her basement with the intention of creating hybrid dogs and humans. A group of fellow animal rights activists stage a rescue mission at the last moment, but unfortunately fail to save their friends who have already fallen victim to Becky’s twisted experiments.
In a chilling conclusion, a person attempting to steal a package from Becky’s home is attacked and killed by one of her monstrous creations. Did you know that “Fur Babies” was written and directed by Justin Long and his brother, Christian Long?
5. “Stowaway”
In the concluding video of V/H/S/Beyond, penned by Mike Flanagan and expertly directed by Kate Siegel, we find ourselves captivated by a woman’s journey into the Mojave Desert to document extraterrestrial sightings. She interviews residents who describe seeing peculiar lights, and one night, she chases a light she sees into what appears to be an Unidentified Flying Object (UFO).
Following its debut at Fantastic Fest in September, the latest addition to the V/H/S series, titled V/H/S/Beyond, can now be streamed on Shudder. Of all the videos from this edition, which one do you find most captivating?
