Agatha All Along episode 4 recap: "If I Can't Reach You/Let My Song Teach You"

As I stand here, grappling with the tragic loss of Sharon, otherwise known as Mrs. Hart, the tension within our coven is palpable. Fingers are being pointed, accusations flying, as we make preparations for her burial. Alice approaches the lifeless body of our dear friend, while others watch on in somber silence. Lilia attempts to interject, reminding us all to be considerate towards Alice, suggesting that her mother might have met a similar fate on The Road. Yet, Alice swiftly silences her, setting the record straight. She reveals that her mother didn’t succumb to The Witches’ Road but instead perished in a hotel fire during her touring days.

Later on, Jen queries Alice about why she chose to join the coven and undertake the challenges of The Witches’ Road despite knowing her mom’s fate. Alice explains that her mother had once shared with her that The Road held salvation for her. We’ll likely learn more about this revelation as the story unfolds.

While helping Alice and Teen dig a grave for Mrs. Hart, I found myself caught up in a spirited debate with Agatha, Jen, and Lilia about our coven’s current state. Agatha suggested that we no longer require a replacement for Mrs. Hart since we’re now embarking on our journey, but Jen and Lilia strongly disagreed. They contended that the lyrics of “The Ballad” clearly indicate that a complete coven is necessary to face the trials, while Agatha believed that our coven only needs two witches.

In the realm of our favorite game, I recall a time when I, along with two others, faced the trials on The Road. Recently, Agatha claimed she only needed two witches for this task, and now, she gives me the signal – two fingers up. Skeptical as Jen and Lilia are, they insist we need a Green Witch to proceed. With a swift incantation, they summon a backup Green Witch, and who else but Rio Vidal appears!

As a gamer, I find myself in an unexpected predicament with Rio rejoining our coven, her return not going as smoothly as anticipated due to some palpable tension between us. Frankly, I’d prefer she stayed away, but my fellow members seem indifferent, seeing it as an opportunity since they don’t care for her either.

Upon stepping into the house, I find myself transported back to the era of ’70s rock bands, as if by some enchantment, my outfit has magically transformed to fit the theme. It’s clear that The Road is undergoing a transformation for our coven. As we all scour the house for clues to initiate the second test, Alice spots a photograph of her mother hanging on the wall. Lilia then inquires if her mother was attempting to open The Road through her concerts. Alice replies that her mother’s fans were essentially her coven, implying that was indeed her mother’s intention. Strangely, Lilia begins uttering incoherent phrases, causing concern, but Alice eventually dismisses it.

In a soundproof room within their home, Agatha and Rio engage in a brief conversation. Rio queries about the progress of Agatha’s power-seeking journey, to which Agatha responds cryptically, “It’s moving along.” Rio then accuses Agatha of being restless and expresses her readiness to instigate chaos. However, Agatha advises patience as it’s premature.

In an attempt to force Rio into a truce, Agatha strategically activates the intercom system in the recording booth, making their conversation audible to everyone in the main room. Her intention was to provoke the others into hating Rio, as she wanted them to hear about her wicked plan: to watch Agatha murder all the other witches, then gather their bodies. However, the others were appalled by this revelation and were preparing to confront Rio when a distorted melody began blaring over the speakers instead.

A teenager believed a vinyl record held a clue, only for it to play in reverse. Agatha angrily throws the record on the ground and steps on it, but it’s already too damaged. The unfortunate duo have been afflicted by a curse, marking the beginning of the second trial. Alice experiences weightlessness, while Lilia starts emitting smoke. As a protective witch, Alice quickly acts to draw a circle around Lilia in an attempt to halt the smoking.

Currently, the group is tasked with finding a solution to lift the curse. Lilia informs her companions that this can only be achieved by confronting it head-on. Suddenly, Jen’s body begins emitting smoke, prompting Alice to draw a protective circle around her, halting the smoke. Both Jen and Lilia discover matching burn marks on their shoulders. Alice examines the shattered record and recognizes it as her mother’s copy of The Ballad. Agatha accuses Alice of having brought the curse into their midst, causing Alice to break down in tears.

She tells everyone that she didn’t think the curse was real, but now she knows it is. She shows her shoulder to the others, which has a faint scar. She thought it was a birthmark, but her mother had the same one. Apparently, it’s a generational curse that’s been passed down in their family, and now it’s affected the coven. Agatha and the rest of the coven come to a realization that the only way they can break the curse is if they play Alice’s mom’s version of The Ballad. Why? Well, her version is a protection spell that’s been saving Alice’s life all these years. They believe that if they play it now, it’ll end the curse.

In the midst of everyone strumming their chosen instruments while performing “The Ballad,” the house unexpectedly ignites. During his performance on the guitar, a fragment of glass pierces young Teen’s side, but he persists with his music. In an eerie turn of events, a demonic creature, manifested as a curse, swoops into the room and lands on Alice’s shoulder as she plays the piano. The entity somehow ignites Alice, yet she presses on playing. As she finishes her final melodious note, the creature vanishes, the clock ceases ticking, and the piano mysteriously unveils a hidden passageway leading back to The Road. With this performance, they managed to break the curse and conquer the second trial.

Instead of him, the Teen is severely hurt and needs immediate help. They make their way back to The Road and find a tree stump where they lay the Teen down. From his side protrudes a shard of glass that they carefully remove. Despite their efforts, he continues to bleed profusely. Jen, using her magical abilities, performs a healing spell on him. Miraculously, the teen’s injuries vanish, and he will survive! At a later time, some members of the coven gather around a campfire and swap tales from their past. Jen reveals that she was once an 11th-generation root worker and midwife who lost her magical powers to a man who managed to bind her without possessing any magic himself.

In another location, Agatha remains vigil as Teen sleeps. Upon waking, he queries Agatha if she was responsible for marking him with the symbol. Initially, she denies it, but later, she admits she’s unsure. Agatha explains that sigils affect their caster and can be dissolved when they’re no longer useful. After a brief intimate conversation, Teen spoils the moment by inquiring about Agatha’s son, causing her to depart from him to reunite with others.

In the heart of our campfire gathering, I (Rio) share an old wound, one that still stings. Long ago, I made a mistake that left someone I cared for deeply hurt. That gnawing regret is my scar. Agatha storms off in anger, hinting that she’s the one I spoke of.

It seems clear that Rio believes Teen isn’t Agatha’s child, but one might wonder how she arrived at this conclusion. Let’s keep watching the intriguing dark fantasy miniseries to uncover the truth.
