Joker: Folie à Deux director promises this is his last DC movie (which he said last time)

As a die-hard fan of the Batman universe, I must say that the upcoming movie “Joker: Folie à Deux” has me absolutely thrilled! The original “Joker” was a masterpiece, and Joaquin Phoenix’s portrayal of Arthur Fleck was simply unparalleled. The idea of him returning to the character, this time with the enigmatic Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, is nothing short of exhilarating.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’m pumped about the upcoming release of “Joker: Folie à Deux” this weekend! If the sequel manages to captivate audiences even half as much as its 2019 predecessor, “Joker,” we’re in for an unforgettable ride. In the original film, Joaquin Phoenix portrayed Arthur Fleck, a character who embodied the Clown Prince of Crime, albeit technically not the original Batman antagonist. The movie unfolded in Gotham City, but it was self-contained and didn’t require extensive knowledge of Batman to enjoy.

In a subtle ballet, Phillips and his team find themselves immersed. Creating a sequel might appear as courting danger, but during an interview with NPR, Phillips shared that he felt incomplete following the production of the initial film. “Frequently… as much as we relish making a movie,” Phillips admits, “we’re often eagerly waiting for its completion.” However, on the set of Joker, Joaquin and Phillips didn’t want their collaboration to conclude.

Thus, the concept of shared madness, known as Folie à Deux, was conceived. The upcoming film expands on the dreamlike dance numbers from its predecessor, transforming into a full-fledged musical production – and that’s where Lady Gaga steps in. Yet, it preserves the edgy, rebellious essence of the initial storyline. As director Phillips contemplated, “Movies often serve as mirrors.” In this film, the justice system and media are depicted as corrupt, reflecting societal concerns. Moreover, it delves into the corruption within the entertainment industry itself.

Following this statement, Phillips indicates that he’s finished with Joker movies and might be preparing to revisit something similar to The Hangover series, which brought him initial fame. He expresses, “This year is likely going to get quite wild. It seems like everyone could use a moment of relaxation and laughter again. I believe I am ready to create another comedy. I think that’s what the world requires.” There are no plans for a standalone Harley Quinn movie as he told The Hollywood Reporter, “I don’t feel that’s where this movie is heading for me. I feel like my time in the DC Universe was these two films.

In essence, that’s approximately how Phillips expressed himself following the release of the initial Joker film. He was quite straightforward about the factors that had shifted. “When a film grosses a billion dollars,” he stated then, “they don’t discuss a sequel as if it’s not a given.

Perhaps the success of “Joker: Folie à Deux” in the box office could influence whether Phillips directs another gritty, experimental Batman-style film, given that he and Phoenix are earning significantly more for the sequel (produced at a cost of $200 million) compared to the original (made with a budget of $55 million). This increase in earnings likely plays a role as well.

We’ll find out soon enough. Joker: Folie à Deux opens in theaters tomorrow, October 3!
