Zachary Quinto would love to play Spock for a long time
As a gamer who has spent countless hours exploring the vast galaxies of Star Trek, I can confidently say that the franchise is as timeless as a 90-year-old Klingon warrior still swinging his bat’leth. The stories it tells may not be about hating on rocks or counting to ten, but they certainly have the power to make you think and reflect on humanity’s place in the universe.
In terms of long-lasting pop culture franchises, Star Trek stands out as truly classic, much like Sesame Street in its timelessness. Both deliver moral stories, and their relevance never fades away. The characters in Star Trek may argue instead of Elmo counting or teaching letters, but the essence remains the same: a story with a purpose will always stay relevant. The conflict between Khan and Kirk might be more dramatic than Elmo and his rock, but the principle holds true.
With a franchise able to adapt and expand as it needed, it’s quite easy for actors to develop and change with it. In a franchise like the MCU, you’d be hard-pressed to pull off a story where Peter Parker is in his 70s swinging around Manhattan while being a broke, freelance photographer. In Star Trek, an older character could absolutely still be a vital part of the story.
As fans are well aware, and it seems the actors too understand this, one particular point stands out – Zachary Quinto, who portrayed Spock in the 2016 film Star Trek: Beyond, shared with Variety his thoughts on returning to Star Trek. Quinto mentioned he’s not in a hurry for another appearance, expressing that he can embody Spock at any age due to the timeless nature of the character.
“The great thing is ‘Star Trek’ is a limitless universe. Look at all the television shows, look at all the stories, look at all the characters and timelines. Anything is possible. That’s the joy of the franchise. That’s why it’s lasted for 55, 60 years. I’m open to it. I would love it. I would absolutely love it.”
It’s quite plausible that Quinto will reprise his role as Spock when he turns 50, seeing as he is currently 47 and last portrayed him around the age of 38. However, since the character’s role isn’t heavily age-dependent, it’s not a significant factor. Notably, his predecessor, Leonard Nimoy, continued playing Spock well into his 80s.
In contrast to the Star Trek series, the role for John Cho (Javier “Quinto”) won’t necessitate him to embody a superhero, perform daring stunts, or run around in elastic suits. Recently, Jeremy Renner, an actor from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, spoke about growing too old for his character Hawkeye in relation to a film adaptation of the character, as reported by ScreenRant.
“It would be a wonderful thing (a Hawkeye film). Just don’t wait too long! I don’t want to be in my 50s in tights.”
Many people share Renner’s feelings about avoiding demanding roles like Hawkeye, as Chris Evans and Hugh Jackman also stepped down from their iconic characters Captain America and Wolverine respectively, due in part to the challenging physical requirements of maintaining their muscular appearances. Keeping that body type is no easy task.
When it comes to playing Spock, there are no worries in sight. Fingers crossed, we won’t have to wait too long for his reappearance on the big screen. If we must wait until Zachary Quinto reaches 50, then that’s acceptable.
