As a lifelong Star Trek enthusiast who can remember the days when I had to set my VCR to record the latest episode, I must say that these recent changes have left me feeling a little like Captain Kirk lost in an uncharted galaxy. The closing of the Star Trek Explorer magazine feels like the final frontier has been breached, a poignant reminder of the passage of time and the changing tide of fandom.

Life is continually marked by change, a phenomenon that impacts each one of us in various ways. Regardless of our desires, change is inevitable and unavoidable, touching aspects of our lives ranging from personal to professional relationships, and even those with acquaintances. It’s not unusual for change to influence the things we cherish deeply.

Beyond just Star Trek, this franchise has undergone significant transformations since its inception in 1966. As our lives move forward and certain aspects of daily life shift, so too does the franchise adapt and change accordingly. Nowadays, you don’t need to scour local news for TV listings to catch Star Trek, because it’s no longer airing on television. Instead, it has found new platforms to reach its audience.

Today, we don’t face the rigid restrictions we once did 30 years back, whether it be advantageous or disadvantageant. As progress and change continue to unfold, some cherished relics from yesteryears remain untouched, rooted in their original places. Over the past, there are three instances of classic Star Trek elements that have ceased to exist recently.

Star Trek Explorer

The renowned Star Trek Explorer magazine has announced it will be shutting down following a three-decade run. Debuting during the height of the Star Trek phenomenon in the ’80s and ’90s, the magazine chronicled the release of the film Star Trek Generations, the expansion of the series universe through Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise, as well as video games, collectibles, interviews, and much more. After 30 years of providing us with exciting content, the magazine has regrettably decided to cease operations permanently.

Fans aged 40 or below can easily recall the delight these timeless toys offered us. Spanning multiple shows and movies, they served as a unifying force among Star Trek enthusiasts of various generations for quite some time. After an extended hiatus in production, the partnership resumed again just a couple of years back, teasing fans both old and new with the prospect of fresh toys. However, young fans eager to recreate their favorite scenes or collectors aiming to grow their collections felt let down when the line was discontinued once more. This termination might be permanent this time.

The cast of the Next Generation

Fortunately, the original cast of The Next Generation is still alive, but given the conclusion of Star Trek: Picard, it seems extremely unlikely that they will appear together in a new series or movie again. Over the years, these talented actors have been our beloved stars of the franchise, providing us with endless entertainment.
