August 2026 on HBO Max will feature eight new releases, starting with the DC drama Lanterns on August 16th. The series stars Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler as Green Lantern detectives. Other highlights include the Anne Hathaway film Mother Mary from A24, a new edition of Hard Knocks following the Seattle Seahawks, the third season of Conan O’Brien Must Go, the neo-Western Normal with Bob Odenkirk, and the documentary series Monsters of God, which explores reptile smuggling.
Okay, so I’m super hyped for HBO Max in August 2026! They’re kicking things off with this new DC show, Lanterns, on the 16th, and it looks awesome. But that’s not all – they’ve got eight big releases throughout the month. It starts with Hard Knocks following the Seahawks on August 4th, and then later in the month, on the 21st, they’re dropping the A24 film Mother Mary and a new season of Conan O’Brien Must Go. It’s gonna be a busy month of binge-watching!
The new drama Lanterns premieres on August 16th, with episodes released each week. The series centers on John Stewart (Aaron Pierre), a new recruit, and veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) as they team up to solve a mysterious murder in the American Midwest that has connections to a larger cosmic event. The show also stars Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Laura Linney, Jason Ritter, Ulrich Thomsen, Nathan Fillion, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones. Created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King – who also wrote the first episode – the series is showrun by Mundy and directed by James Hawes for its initial two episodes. James Gunn and Peter Safran are executive producers, bringing the characters from DC’s Green Lantern comics to life.
On August 4th, HBO begins its series of premium content with Hard Knocks: Training Camp With the Seattle Seahawks. This is the first time the Seahawks have been featured on the award-winning show, which provides an inside look at their training camp in Renton, Washington. Viewers will get to know new head coach Mike Macdonald, quarterback Sam Darnold, rising star Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and key defensive players like Devon Witherspoon and Byron Murphy II throughout the five weekly episodes.
On August 6th, HBO will release Monsters of God, a five-part documentary series unfolding weekly. Filmmaker Eric Goode, known for his passion for reptiles, investigates the illegal exotic animal trade, revealing a massive criminal network involving smugglers, collectors, and the police trying to stop them. The series is a production of Goode Films and A24, in association with Central Pictures, presented by HBO Documentary Films.
I’m really excited for the new Strangers movie! It’s called The Strangers: Chapter 2 and it’s coming out August 7th. Renny Harlin is directing, which is awesome, and the cast looks great with Madelaine Petsch, Gabriel Basso, and Ema Horvath. The story is by Alan R. Cohen and Alan Freedland, but it’s based on the original characters created by Bryan Bertino, so I’m hoping it stays true to the first film!
On August 14th, two new titles will be released. First, Magnolia Pictures presents Normal, a neo-Western thriller starring Bob Odenkirk as a seemingly ordinary sheriff in the Midwest whose peaceful life is disrupted by a failed bank robbery. The film reunites talent from John Wick and Nobody, with direction by Ben Wheatley and a script by Derek Kolstad, and also features Henry Winkler and Lena Headey. Also debuting that day is Whitmer Thomas: Terminal Crew of Dudes, the comedian’s second HBO stand-up special, which combines original music, personal home videos, and stories about growing up in Alabama.
August ends with the release of two new titles on the 21st. First, A24 presents Mother Mary, a film written and directed by David Lowery, starring Anne Hathaway as a famous pop star. She reconnects with her former costume designer, Sam Anselm (played by Michaela Coel), right before a big comeback show. The film also features Hunter Schafer, Kaia Gerber, and FKA twigs. Also premiering is the third season of Conan O’Brien Must Go, which follows Conan O’Brien as he travels the world over four episodes to catch up with fans he met on his podcast.
