Katy Perry’s AFL Grand Final performance goes viral for a very unexpected reason as fans notice hilarious detail: ‘The new left shark’
As a longtime Katy Perry fan and someone who has seen her perform live multiple times, I must say that Saturday’s AFL Grand Final show at the MCG was truly unforgettable. However, what made it stand out among other performances wasn’t just her powerhouse vocals or electrifying energy – no, it was the unexpected viral moment involving a deflated balloon dancer!
Katy Perry wowed the crowd at the MCG in Melbourne on Saturday during her AFL Grand Final show.
But the pop star, 39, went viral as she performed for a very unexpected reason.
While Katy Perry crooned her popular tune “Teenage Dream,” a few of her backup dancers donned silver balloon outfits.

Among the numerous silver balloon costumes that were inflated, one costume remained deflated, making it stand out distinctly from the rest.
Many viewers took to social media to make light of the deflated dancer.
In a TikTok post, user yasminjnelson described a deflated balloon as the modern equivalent of “Left Shark,” a memorable moment from Katy Perry’s performance.
In one of their TikTok posts, they mentioned the well-known incident during Katy Perry’s 2015 Super Bowl show, where a dancer wearing a shark costume appeared to move uneasily alongside the performer.
On the right, the shark-costumed dancer moved in rhythm, but the dancer on the left seemed to be out of sync and not harmonizing with their partner’s steps.

Many commenters on TikTok also referenced the 2015 moment.
One exclaimed, “Did someone mention Left Shark?” Meanwhile, another noted that both the viral instances took place during the performance of ‘Teenage Dream’, to which they added, “IT WAS THE SAME SONG.
‘Why does it always happen during Teenage Dream,’ another commenter expressed.
Perry’s 20-minute performance during the AFL Grand Final showcased two songs from her recent album 143, titled “Lifetimes” and “Gorgeous,” as well as a collaboration with Kim Petras, following rumors that she was only allowed to perform one new song by AFL officials.

Regardless of introducing some fresh tracks, it was her popular songs like Roar, Teenage Dream, Dark Horse, and Firework that energized the crowd, with Katy starting off by performing Roar first.
As a lifestyle enthusiast, let me share an exciting moment: I had the privilege of performing a version of “I Kissed A Girl” alongside the talented Tina Arena. After that electrifying number, we seamlessly transitioned into her iconic Australian pop hit, “Chains.” It was an unforgettable musical collaboration!
However, her selection for the setlist was unexpectedly different since she didn’t perform Hot n Cold, a song widely known as the theme for MasterChef Australia and often humorously referred to as Australia’s unofficial national anthem.
