A big part of that will be finding a permanent replacement, and honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if CBS draws that storyline out for a while.

Mark Harmon’s character, Gibbs, briefly reappearing in season 23 raises the possibility of a full return in the future, though it’s not confirmed for season 24. The show has also been successfully bringing back popular past characters like Vera Franks and Ellie Bishop, demonstrating a willingness to celebrate its history.
