There is no alien too powerful to bring back for Star Trek

As a longtime Star Trek fan with decades of stargazing under my belt, I must respectfully disagree with ScreenRant’s recent assertion that the Douwd is too powerful to revisit in the Star Trek universe. To me, it’s not about whether an alien race is overpowered; it’s about how our favorite captains navigate their encounters with such beings.

As a gamer, I’ve always found Star Trek to be no stranger when it comes to exploring the thin line that separates us from the mysteries of the universe. Whether it’s aliens, spirits, or even deities, Star Trek never shies away from these topics. Sometimes, like in the case of Sub Rosa, we hope they wouldn’t venture there, but more often than not, we’re grateful they did. From the very origins of the franchise with the formidable Trelane, us fans are accustomed to the idea of invincible extraterrestrial beings.

Star Trek franchises such as The Next Generation, Voyager, and Deep Space Nine have delved deeply into various celestial concepts over the years. From the enigmatic Q, Mrs. Q, and the “Prophets,” to numerous other cosmic entities, these series have showcased alien beings capable of wreaking havoc for extended periods. It’s quite surprising that ScreenRant would argue against the reintroduction of a single alien race due to their perceived power level.

In a recent article, ScreenRant author Ashley Byrd asserts strongly that the character Douwd was overly powerful and should not reappear in the Star Trek universe. However, it can be argued that no alien is so powerful that they could not find a place within the vast expanse of Star Trek’s universe.

After all, knowing you can’t outfight or outsmart someone is a very relatable experience. Why take a very relatable idea away from the writers? Jean-Luc Picard, Kathryne Janeway, and Benjamin Sisko (as well as James Kirk) were skilled orators who were able to talk themselves out of a problem. The idea of space gods basically forces that series’ captain to think of a new way to resolve an issue.

As a fan, I can’t help but ponder about the universe’s Trelanes, Qs, and Douwds – these colossal entities. There’s always this thrilling idea that they might engage in a showdown, letting their power clash to determine supremacy. It’s a concept that seems tailor-made for the creators of Godzilla, as it involves pitting two titans against each other on the silver screen.

Star Trek hasn’t yet assembled such colossal alien characters on screen, but perhaps it’s high time we see them interacting.
