MDK Fresskowy: Worlds is a dream come true, rookie nerves now off
As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours honing my craft and living for the thrill of competition, I can truly empathize with Fresskowy’s exhilaration at finally making it to the League of Legends World Championship (LoL Worlds 2024). However, as much as I share his excitement, I must admit that the venue leaves something to be desired.
In his own words, Fresskowy, our midlaner from team MDK, expresses that playing at Worlds is like a cherished dream realized for him. However, he admits to having a preference for the event taking place in a different location.
MAD Lions Koi began the League of Legends 2024 World Championship (LoL Worlds 2024) Play-In Stage by securing a victory. Here’s an interview with mid-laner Bartłomiej “Fresskowy” Przewoźnik from MAD Lions, discussing their win, the venue, and his aspirations.
“I expected worse things,” says MDK Fresskowy
As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to share that MAD Lions KOI, with me among them, made an impressive debut at LoL Worlds 2024 by sweeping Vietnamese team Vikings Esports in our first match. This is the initial international tournament for all of us except our jungler, Elyoya. Fresskowy noted that as rookies, we had to adapt and overcome our initial nerves.
How are you feeling after the win against Viking Esports?
MDK Fresskowy: I’m in high spirits! It’s great that we improved significantly in the second match. I believe it was our debut ‘best-of’, us rookie four, so the first game had a bit of tension. [Game 1] was quite tense. It was a rollercoaster ride with many unexpected twists and turns. However, the second game was much smoother. So, I’m delighted about our debut ‘best-of’… I had anticipated more challenges could arise. Thus, I’m pleased!
What were your thoughts during the laneswaps and sidelane fights in Game 1?
In recent times, we’ve been scrimmaging frequently, leading to numerous role swaps during these scrims. This seems to be the current trend, though it’s not a constant rule – you can still play as usual. However, mid-laners find themselves in a unique situation, somewhat isolated on an ‘island’, while top and bot lanes are continuously switching with the jungle. So, this isn’t anything unfamiliar to me.
What brought the change in consistency in MDK between Games 1 and 2?
MDK Fresskowy: Melzhet, our MAD Lions KOI coach, suggested we take some deep breaths. The tension from the initial game had gotten to us, but after that, it was like a weight being lifted off our shoulders. We felt more at ease during the second game, I’d say.
What are your opinions on the mid meta going from ADCs like Tristana/Corki to mages like Syndra/Orianna?
In Worlds 2024, it appears that Attack Damage Carries (ADCs) might not be as prevalent due to significant nerfs on their items and abilities. Instead, we could witness a rise in Control Mages and more AP champions in the mid lane. While it’s still possible to play AD champions, I believe the meta for the mid lane will shift towards control mages this year.
Fresskowy on Worlds venues: I wanted to go to Korea or China
How do you feel about the Worlds 2024 venue?
As a gamer, I’d have preferred the location of Worlds 2024 to be different, especially in another country or region. The issue here is that the studio feels a bit familiar due to us playing here all year, diminishing the sense of Worlds for me. It’s a bummer that Worlds 2024 is still taking place in Europe, the same studio. I was hoping for Korea, China, or somewhere else to truly immerse myself in the experience. However, one must make do with what they have.
How do you get into the “I’m in Worlds” mindset?
Experiencing the presence of other teams during a match makes me feel more immersed in the World Championship atmosphere. Simply laying eyes on my opponents is enough to put me in the right frame of mind for Worlds. It’s quite straightforward; when I walk into the studio and see all the different colors, it instantly sets the tone for a World Championship experience.
Additionally, exploring “Worlds” has long been a cherished aspiration of mine, so immersing myself in the atmosphere isn’t particularly challenging. However, I must admit, it would have been more enjoyable to participate in games set in a diverse geographical location.
Did you seek advice from more experienced players to prepare for this year’s Worlds?
MDK Fresskowy: I’ve been informed that there’s always some challenge or issue. For instance, at the hotel, since we don’t have our usual training ground or office — we’re competing from the hotel to fully immerse ourselves in the Worlds experience. Our goal is to return next year and ultimately win it, so we aim to make the most of this year’s Worlds. If next year takes us to another region, we won’t have the convenience of our familiar office or city, so we choose to make ourselves uncomfortable by staying in a hotel.
Occasionally, there are issues with the internet connection, setup, or room temperature. I’ll make the best of it for now, getting accustomed to the situation, and next year, things should be significantly smoother. By then, I’ll be much more comfortable and relaxed.
Do you have a message to MAD Lions KOI supporters?
MDK Fresskowy here: I’m truly appreciative of the backing we’ve received. This year, despite a challenging split, we’ve been showered with plenty of encouraging messages. I’m doing my utmost to deliver top-notch performance at Worlds, to bring joy to our fans. Here’s hoping they continue to stand by us, as they’ve been simply fantastic this year.
Prediction for PSG Talon vs paiN Gaming?
I would say PSG 2-0. I think they are a way better team.
