LEGO games reached a new level with the release of Star Wars, which became incredibly popular and established a winning formula. LEGO Indiana Jones confirmed this wasn’t just luck, as it also successfully recreated a beloved movie with humor that appealed to everyone. However, LEGO Batman: The Videogame in 2008 broke the mold by featuring a completely original story.
The LEGO Batman series kept improving with LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes, which was a big step forward thanks to fully voiced characters and a vast open world. Subsequent LEGO games built on this successful formula, and Batman played a key role in defining where the series went next. Now, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight promises to take the experience even further, making it a must-play for any Batman enthusiast.
The New LEGO Batman Has a Fantastic Story
I’m a huge LEGO Batman fan, and LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight really dives into Bruce Wayne’s journey to becoming the hero we know. What’s so cool about this game is how it draws inspiration from all the different Batman movies and shows over the years to create its story. I was a little worried at first that all those references might take away from the main plot, but it actually works really well – they enhance the experience instead!
The game successfully blends a new story with nostalgic references, creating a satisfying experience. While a few moments briefly slow down the action to focus on those references, for the most part, it feels like a heartfelt story that the developers, TT Games, were truly passionate about creating, rather than just a compilation of fan favorites.
Plus, the game is filled with classic LEGO humor, which is a real highlight. It’s genuinely funny, with plenty of jokes that will make you laugh, and it appeals to players of all ages.
Shai Matheson deserves special recognition for his portrayal of Batman. He expertly captures the character’s dark and serious side, but also delivers some of the game’s funniest moments simply through his performance. We hope to see him play Batman again in the future.
Legacy of the Dark Knight Feels Like a Batman Arkham Game
The new game, Legacy of the Dark Knight, clearly takes inspiration from previous Batman projects, but it’s most strongly influenced by Rocksteady’s Arkham series. This is especially noticeable in the combat system, which emphasizes Batman and his allies’ fighting skills. Like the Arkham games, battles are smooth, rewarding, and particularly fun as you build up long combos.
Sometimes, the combat feels so good it’s easy to forget you’re not playing an Arkham game – it really captures that same fast-paced, energetic feel. The new ‘Dark Knight’ difficulty is also great; with more enemies and limited health, it makes every encounter much more challenging and intense.
Aside from the fighting, Gotham City is beautiful and a joy to wander around. The game has a great range of collectibles to discover – it’s not just about finding minikits and LEGO bricks. You can also find missing posters, items to customize the Batcave, and studs, which you can use to unlock different Batman suits, like the powerful Absolute Batman suit.
The Riddler Trophies are a great addition to the game. They’re not only a nostalgic nod to previous games, but also offer genuinely challenging and rewarding puzzles.
Just exploring Gotham feels great, even without actively completing missions. Moving around the city is fast and exciting, particularly when using the grappling hook. You can also drive the Batmobile, and customize its appearance with designs inspired by different eras, from the classic Adam West series to the darker look from Zack Snyder’s films. These details really enhance the Batman experience for fans.
Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is One of the Best LEGO Games Ever
Marketing for Legacy of the Dark Knight promised the ultimate Batman story. While it might not be the definitive Batman tale, the game is undoubtedly one of the greatest Batman experiences ever created. LEGO Batman is filled with passion and attention to detail, making it enjoyable for any Batman fan. The game’s sheer fun and energy are guaranteed to bring a smile to your face – maybe even a bigger one than the Joker could manage!
What truly makes LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight great isn’t just its nods to Batman lore, but also its fun gameplay and the excitement of discovering Gotham City. Whether you’re a fan of LEGO, Batman, or both, you’ll find something to love, making this game a definite purchase.
The game is available on PlayStation, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. A Nintendo Switch 2 version is also planned, though a release date hasn’t been announced yet. Those who buy the Digital Deluxe Edition can start playing early on May 19th.
