Angelina Jolie shares incredible photo of her meeting with Sudanese refugees in Chad as she calls on UN to take action
As a long-time follower and ardent supporter of Angelina Jolie, I am consistently inspired by her tireless efforts to bring attention to global humanitarian crises and her unwavering commitment to making a difference in the lives of those who need it most. Her recent visit to Chad, where she met with Sudanese refugees, is yet another testament to her dedication and compassion.
Angelina Jolie posted a compelling image from her encounter with Sudanese refugees, urging the United Nations to intervene in addressing the country’s humanitarian emergency.
The poignant image showed Angelina, clad in a black cloak, meeting with several women in a thatched dwelling in Chad.
Angelina, aged 49, an actress and philanthropist, titled her post: ‘This morning, the United Nations General Assembly deliberated on the financial consequences of inactivity and the immediate necessity to intensify global humanitarian aid efforts in Sudan and its surrounding areas. I’ve just come back from Chad, where I encountered Sudanese refugees who have fled across the border.’
Because of constant conflict and violence, Sudan is currently grappling with the world’s largest displacement predicament, having over 10 million individuals internally displaced and more than 2 million seeking refuge in neighboring countries. Additionally, the crisis is exacerbated by widespread famine, as nearly 25.6 million people—more than half the population—are struggling with severe hunger.
Although classified as one of the world’s poorest nations, the people of Chad continue to show remarkable generosity by providing shelter, sustenance, water resources, and healthcare facilities to approximately 1.4 million refugees from Sudan.
As a devoted follower, I’ve found myself deeply moved by the remarkable work being done by local grassroots organizations in Chad and Sudan. They’ve set up communal kitchens, shared living spaces, makeshift health facilities, and women’s cooperatives. Through their tireless efforts, they’ve distributed essential medication and organized educational programs. Their accomplishments, given the limited resources at their disposal, are truly inspiring.
As a fervent admirer, I’m compelled to emphasize that they can hardly tackle the colossal magnitude of this predicament without substantial global aid and resources. Crucially, an immediate ceasefire is imperative to halt the ongoing casualties, displacement, and hardship.
‘My hope is that today’s meeting will result in decisions, not just conversation. Every hour matters as lives are at stake.
Since April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in conflict due to escalating clashes between opposing military commanders that eventually led to violent outbreaks.
The situation places General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, leader of the Sudanese Army, in opposition to the Rapid Support Forces, commanded by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, widely recognized as ‘Hemedti.’
Over 10 million individuals have been forced to flee their homes due to the ongoing conflict, making up nearly a fifth of Sudan’s total population. Some of these displaced people have sought refuge inside the country, while others have crossed international borders.
On Wednesday, UN Chief Antonio Guterres expressed worry about the intensification of fighting in Sudan’s conflict during a meeting with the country’s military leader, which took place on the fringes of a diplomatic event in New York.
This week, the UN’s main gathering has kept Sudan as a prominent topic, focusing primarily on the severe humanitarian predicament and the ongoing refugee crisis caused by the conflict that erupted last year, which has been under intense debate.
The United Nations’ top relief official, Joyce Msuya, stated that for 17 long months, individuals in Sudan have been experiencing a living nightmare, and their pain only seems to intensify further.
According to an evaluation supported by the United Nations, there’s a significant danger of severe famine spreading across Sudan – a level of hunger crisis that hasn’t been witnessed globally for many years.
According to a United Nations report, the secretary-general voiced significant worry over the ongoing intensification of the conflict in Sudan, which is causing immense harm to civilian populations and could potentially trigger instability in neighboring regions, during his meeting with General Abdel-Fattah Al-Burhan.
Representatives from the United States, European Union, France, and Germany have collectively called for an immediate halt to hostilities following discussions between their respective ministers. They also expressed concern about potential meddling from external forces in the ongoing situation.
They recommended that all external forces should abstain from offering military assistance to the conflicting sides, following a more comprehensive discussion that involved the United Arab Emirates, often seen as the primary supporter of the RSF.
This month, the World Health Organization reported that at least 20,000 individuals lost their lives. However, other estimates suggest a much higher death toll, with the U.S. envoy for Sudan, Tom Perriello, stating that as many as 150,000 people might have perished – a figure significantly greater than the casualties in the Gaza war.
