The actor from Diagnosis Murder, who is about to celebrate his 99th birthday in December, was scheduled to attend the FanX event in Salt Lake City from September 26th through the 29th.
The organizers regretfully share that Dick Van Dyke cannot make it to FanX due to unavoidable circumstances.
He acknowledges his appreciation towards everyone who stands by him. However, due to his advanced age nearing 99, the rigors of travel and engaging with multitudes of people have become too strenuous for him currently.
Van Dyke previously attended the event back in 2017.
Previously, he was spotted in a public setting during the Creative Arts Emmy Awards earlier this month. He quipped that he’s still searching for employment as he approaches his 99th birthday.
The star attended the Fan Fusion convention in Phoenix in May.
More recently, Van Dyke equaled the record held by Norman Lear for being the oldest individuals to win an Emmy. They both achieved this remarkable feat at the age of 98 years old; with Lear taking home his award in 2020.
On Saturday, during the Creative Arts Emmys, Dick Van Dyke was awarded the Outstanding Variety Special accolade for his 2023 birthday special titled “Dick Van Dyke 98 Years of Magic,” which he celebrated on his birthday.
Following the presentation of the award, Van Dyke expressed to journalists (through People) his wish to be recognized for bringing ‘laughter.’ He continued to sit on the red carpet within the winner’s room.
He expressed his gratitude for bringing laughter to people for an incredible 75 years. Being a part of this profession for such a long time, he finds it hard to believe that he is still active and entertaining audiences.
The well-known comedian, scanning the room, quipped, ‘I’m job hunting if anyone’s hiring.’
When asked what advice he would give to younger performers, he said to stick with the craft.
‘You have to stick with it. You’re gonna go through hard times and a lot of auditions … but you have to stay with it,’ Van Dyke said.
If you trust yourself, take your time and have faith that you are capable, this is crucial.
When asked about his plans for his 99th birthday, the famous figure replied, “I’m just hoping to celebrate another day,” accompanied by one of his characteristic chuckles.
Asked about his feelings while walking towards the car, Van Dyke replied casually, “I’m quite elderly,” followed by another chuckle.
