Superman is at the center of Justice League’s best episodes
As a gamer who grew up in the golden era of Saturday morning cartoons and comic books, “Hereafter” stands as one of those rare episodes that truly resonated with me. The two-parter takes the classic tale of Superman‘s demise and weaves it into an engaging narrative that explores themes of sacrifice, redemption, and the importance of heroes in our lives.
After that, much like other episodes from Justice League, it consisted of a two-part series. This storyline delved into the concept of Superman’s death and the potential impact on the world if Superman were no longer present.
In the opening of “Hereafter”, a team of malevolent foes, each determined to annihilate Superman, initiates their campaign. They engage in combat with the Justice League, until one of them, known as The Toyman, manages to utilize a Kryptonite beam to eliminate Superman. However, it is revealed that Superman was transported to a future where Vandal Savage, an age-old adversary, is the sole survivor on Earth.
In this new reality, the Justice League grapples with a world devoid of Superman, and it’s a challenging time. With no Superman around to intervene, criminals wreak havoc more often. A well-known antagonist, Lobo, makes an appearance and unexpectedly teams up with the Justice League, though they didn’t ask for his assistance.
As I stepped into “Hereafter,” Lobo’s rough-and-tumble presence was undeniably palpable. For a Justice League episode, there was a somber vibe, with everyone assuming Superman had bitten the dust. But let me tell you, Lobo is no ordinary foe; he’s one of DC’s most humorous antagonists, or anti-heroes to be precise. Fighting alongside the Justice League was a sight to behold, as he took down bad guys in ways that made a superhero cringe.
In this scenario, Superman encounters an age-old adversary named Vandal Savage. A foe Superman has little faith in. Vandal Savage discloses that he was responsible for the annihilation of Earth, 30,000 years past, as Superman wasn’t around at that time to prevent it. He subsequently asks Superman to assist him in obtaining a time machine and traveling back to thwart himself from causing the devastation. Upon returning to the past, Superman and Vandal Savage bid farewell as friends, understanding that their next encounter will be as enemies.
Moving forward, the two-part episode titled “Hereafter” is noteworthy for posing thought-provoking queries about the DC universe and the role of Superman within it. It also delves into a man’s remorseful journey as he seeks to rectify past actions, even forming an alliance with one of his longest-standing adversaries in the process.
From now on, “Hereafter” will always hold a special spot in the hearts of its fans. It has stood the test of time and is considered one of the finest episodes from among all the animated series that have been produced.
