Sherwood’s returning character hints at trouble for Ann Branson

As a longtime fan of gritty British dramas, I must say that Sherwood season 2 is living up to my expectations and then some! The blood feud between the Bransons and the Bottomleys has reached boiling points, with family members taking each other’s lives in cold-blooded revenge. Monica Dolan’s portrayal of Ann Branson is nothing short of chilling – her calculated, matter-of-fact threats are enough to send shivers down my spine.

Sherwood season 2 episode 3 spoilers follow.

In just a few episodes into the second season of Sherwood, we find families drawn into a cycle of retaliatory violence, where they’re taking each other’s lives in response, all stemming from the initial demise of Nicky Branson, portrayed by Sam Buchanan.

Monica Dolan’s character, Ann Branson, spearheaded a compelling movement, characterized by relentless and frosty decisions, fueled intensely by deep emotions after the loss of her son.

After Ryan Bottomley (Oliver Huntingdon), Ann’s killer, was put in prison, her desire for vengeance wasn’t satisfied. This led to the death of two members from the Bottomley family. In response, Stephie Bottomley (Bethany Asher) took action, killing Kyre Branson (Conor Deane), a revenge act driven by emotion.

The situation is spiraling, as Ann has declared her intention to eliminate the entire Sparrow family upon learning, it seems, that Daphne (Lorraine Ashbourne) had unsuccessfully tried to warn the Bottomleys about the imminent attack.

Ann’s chilling remark held an undeniable seriousness, as it was delivered in a calm, matter-of-fact manner, devoid of the emotional intensity typically associated with anger and grief. This composed delivery suggests that she is resolute in her intentions, with a focus that promises precision.

It’s hard to predict how the Bottomleys will react once they learn that Stephie is the one who caused Kyre’s demise.

As a gamer, I’d put it this way: It’s looking pretty dicey for me and the rest of the Bottomleys, but there’s this one guy, Scott Rowley from season one, who’s now my cellmate in prison. Seems like he might have my back, which is a bit unsettling, considering he’s a murderer.

If you require a reminder, let me tell you about Scott Rowley and why his recent partnership might pose issues for Ann Branson and her group.

Who is Scott Rowley in Sherwood?

Scott Rowley serves as the main adversary in Sherwood’s first season. His fixation on Gary Jackson, a trade unionist with an apparently idyllic life, led to a tragic end when Scott fatally shot Gary with a bow and arrow, landing him in prison.

Prior to Scott’s incarceration, which occurred after Gary’s demise, Scott chose to flee with a sum of £15,000 that belonged to his mining father who had recently retired. This sum was eventually concealed within Sherwood Forest.

The latest mention of the money occurred when siblings Deano and Rory Sparrow, each equipped with a shovel, decided to take a new trail in the forest, and indeed, they were searching for hidden riches by digging.

Based on what we saw in season two, it appears that the siblings didn’t find anything, a turn of events that actually benefits Ryan Bottomley.

What Scott Rowley’s return in Sherwood means for Ann Branson

Since both the Bottomleys and the Bransons join the cast in season two of Sherwood, there is no information available on their past connections with Scott Rowley.

It’s worth noting that when Ryan Bottomley and Scott Rowley met each other for the first time in prison, there was a subtle hint of familiarity in the glance they shared. Their secretive grins indicated more than just recognition; it suggested a certain camaraderie too.

This apparent bond between the Bottomleys appears poised to benefit them significantly in their escalating feud with the Bransons, which resembles a growing family conflict. A sneak peek at episode four reveals Stephie in the woods, her gaze intense, followed by a scene where someone is digging up a plastic bag from the ground.

The implication is clear – the Bottomleys have got their hands on Scott Rowley’s 15K.

On its own, it signifies nothing, but with wealth can come influence, power, even safety measures against potential threats like the Bransons.

Moreover, it empowers the Bottomleys to take the initiative, launching an attack before the Bransons can respond with a strategic counteraction.

With the Sparrows also teaming up with the police to fortify themselves against the Bransons’ impending wrath, Ann and the clan will be fighting a war on both fronts.

And it’s one they can’t possibly win unless they make some alliances of their own.

Sherwood season two airs Sundays weekly on BBC at 9pm and on BBC iPlayer.
