HBO’s Draco Malfoy Star Explains How He’s Changing Iconic Harry Potter Villain

Lox Pratt, who will play Draco Malfoy in the new Harry Potter TV series, is sharing how his take on the character will be different from Tom Felton’s portrayal.

In an interview with Variety, Pratt said he’ll be adding his own unique take to the character of the blonde villain, but emphasized that the character will still strongly resemble Draco Malfoy in the new Harry Potter project.

According to Pratt, the series will give fans a deeper understanding of Malfoy’s character, revealing hidden complexities that the films didn’t have time to explore. The show offers the creative team the opportunity to develop storylines and characters more fully than was possible in the movies.

“He’s still very much Draco, but I’m putting my own spin on him. He’s definitely got more layers.”

Chris Pratt has appeared in adaptations of books before Harry Potter, and this isn’t the first time he’s played the villain.

Netflix has recently added a new four-part series based on William Golding’s famous 1954 novel, The Lord of the Flies. The story was previously adapted for the big screen in 1963 and 1990, and this version first aired on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK earlier this year.

I’m a huge fan of Lord of the Flies! It’s about these British schoolboys who end up stranded on a deserted island after their plane crashes. It’s fascinating—and terrifying—watching how they try to survive. One of the characters, Jack, played by Pratt, really becomes the villain of the story. His way of leading things just throws everything into complete chaos on the island, and it’s wild to watch unfold.

In a recent interview with Variety, Pratt explained that Jack and Malfoy embody distinct forms of unhappiness and negativity. He described Jack as simply “unloved,” while Malfoy carries the weight of immense family pressure despite receiving affection. Throughout the Harry Potter series, Malfoy struggles to meet his father Lucius’s expectations and is uncertain about his own identity.

I see Draco and Jack’s struggles as very different. Draco is weighed down by intense family pressure and feels unable to meet his father’s expectations, even though he has love in his life. Jack, on the other hand, simply lacks affection, and it doesn’t seem to bother him much – it’s just never been a need for him.

After recently playing two villainous roles, Pratt shared that he enjoys portraying these characters, explaining that “villains are just more fun to play.”

Honestly, as a movie lover, I’ve always thought villains are way more interesting to watch – and even more fun for actors to play! There’s just so much more range and complexity you can explore with a bad guy. It’s way more exciting than being typecast as the hero all the time, wouldn’t you agree?

Even though the new Harry Potter TV series won’t arrive on HBO and HBO Max for over seven months, a short teaser trailer was released in late March, giving fans their first glimpse of the actors who will play the beloved characters from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone/Sorcerer’s Stone.

Though we haven’t seen much of Malfoy yet, actor Tom Pratt is excited for audiences to see his portrayal, as it’s a very different take on the character compared to the movies.

I was really relieved it was so tasteful and didn’t reveal too much! Plus, it was over so quickly, which I appreciated. I can’t wait for everyone to see it because the actor playing him is a completely different take on the character we all know as Draco – it’s going to be amazing!

At just 14, Pratt is a newcomer to acting. He’s only been in two projects so far: The Lord of the Flies and Harry Potter. The Lord of the Flies was particularly well-received, earning a 94% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

I’m so excited to share that they’re still filming the first season of the new Harry Potter series, and it’s expected to be finished later this year! Even better, Chris Pratt and the whole cast – including Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, Arabella Stanton, Nick Frost, John Lithgow, Paapa Essiedu, and Janet McTeer – are already scheduled to start filming season two later in the year. It’s going to be amazing to see them all back on set!

Harry Potter season 1 will premiere in December 2026 on HBO and HBO Max.
