The Acolyte’s Lee Jung-jae “quite surprised” by show’s cancellation
As a devoted fan who has followed Lee Jung-jae’s career from his humble beginnings in South Korea to his recent international stardom, I must admit that I was utterly dismayed by the news of “The Acolyte” being cancelled. The series, with its captivating storytelling and the brilliant performance of Lee as Jedi Master Sol, had the potential to become a timeless addition to the Star Wars universe.

Lee Jung-jae, who shines as The Acolyte’s leading star, expressed his surprise and disappointment upon learning about the show’s cancellation, sharing his feelings on the matter.
In the “Star Wars” saga, now streaming on Disney+, we find Jedi Master Sol, portrayed by Lee, setting off on an adventure alongside his ex-apprentice Osha, played by Amandla Stenberg, as they work together to unravel a string of mysterious crimes.
Although the series garnered mostly favorable feedback, it was recently disclosed (on August 20th) that the production team opted against producing another season. This decision came as a shock to Lee, especially since his character met his end in the final episode.
He shared with Entertainment Weekly that his character had perished during the first season itself, which means he wouldn’t have been part of the second season even if it existed. However, on a personal note, he admired Leslye [Headland] as a writer and director; he found her work to be exceptional.
She had an exceptional knack for storytelling, developing captivating characters and structuring tales with depth. Thus, I was genuinely excited about the prospect of witnessing a second season with her taking charge.
He added that when he heard the cancellation news, he was “quite surprised personally as well”.
Although the show has concluded, Lee, who gained global recognition through his role in Squid Game, has voiced his desire to reprise his character in some form. He also mentioned his aspirations for a comeback of The Acolyte.
He expressed his hope for potential modifications in the future, acknowledging that unpredictability is part of life. On a more intimate note, he truly wishes for additional tales from Leslye’s second season to unfold.
On its debut, The Acolyte broke records on Disney+, gathering a total of 11.1 million viewers within the initial five days of broadcast. Nevertheless, viewership numbers decreased over time, leading to the show’s cancellation not long after.
