How Kyle Walker overcame his council estate upbringing and childhood tragedy to rise in the football ranks - after his father migrated to the UK with just £200 to his name

As I delve into Kyle Walker’s captivating journey, I am struck by the resilience and determination that has propelled him from a promising young talent to one of the most influential players in modern football. Born into a family with humble beginnings, Kyle’s father instilled within him an indomitable spirit, a drive to succeed, and the value of hard work.

As a seasoned lifestyle enthusiast, I’d say for dedicated Manchester City supporters like myself, Kyle Walker stands tall among our cherished stars. His impressive weekly earnings of £160,000 mirror the athletic prowess he consistently brings to the field.

However, the sports figure’s simple past is starkly different from his opulent life now, as he was raised amidst hardship on the Lansdowne Estate in Sheffield, where he faced heart-wrenching tragedies during his upbringing.

Kyle, aged 34, with Jamaican roots, has earlier shared his experience of witnessing harrowing events like a fatal house fire that claimed a life.

In a 2022 interview, the star opened up about his past, sharing moments that significantly impacted his life.

One day, upon returning home from school, he shared with The Mail that he encountered a woman wandering near his residence, donning a motorcycle helmet and brandishing an axe.

“He stated, still wearing a grin, ‘I hadn’t fully understood the gravity of the situation at that time; I was too young to comprehend it all. In retrospect, I can see now that it wasn’t a good thing.'”

Additionally, Kyle happened to come across a horrific fire that originated from a neighbor’s residence. The fire was sparked when someone anonymously poured gasoline into their mail slot and ignited it with a match. Unfortunately, Kyle stumbled upon this tragic incident as he was making his way back home.

The fire was severe, followed by a disturbing sight of someone hanging on the staircase outside my residence. As I was ascending the stairs in my hallway, I didn’t witness the act directly, but the authorities cordoned off the area, making it clear that the incident had occurred near my house.

1. “The children exited due to the fire. The caretakers found them wrapped in some blankets. Their mother, who was rather large, wasn’t able to escape herself.”

In the face of these hurdles, Kyle’s determination to chase a football career has been bolstered by his dad, Michael, and mom, Tracey.

After Michael moved to the UK from Kingston, Jamaica, he came across Kyle, and together they share custody of two additional sons.

Even though Kyle is very close to his parents, he confessed that he often disagreed with Michael’s firm parenting methods, as they frequently led to emotional outbursts from Kyle following every football game.

In a conversation on the BBC Sounds podcast, Kyle Walker shared: “I would dread accompanying my father to football matches. Regardless of whether I played well or poorly, I’d end up crying in the car afterward.”

Kyle went on to say, “I don’t hold it against him for that as it’s shaped me into the person and athlete I am today. I’ve always had a desire to disprove others, and during the early stages of my career, I was trying to show my dad that I could succeed. He did it because he cared.”

Kyle mentioned that while there were challenges, his mom Tracy consistently offered him emotional care and encouragement. It took him a long time to earn his father’s approval through his abilities in football.

Occasionally, it was extremely difficult for me to climb into the car because my mom would say, “Michael, give him a break, he’s done a good job,” when I tried to bother him. He noted this as well.

Initially, I might have netted three goals, but he would have insisted I should have had six instead. It wasn’t until later in my career that he began to acknowledge my performance with “Well done, good job, son.”

Following a few years with City, it became apparent that he could indeed play football quite well.

At 19 years old, Kyle launched his professional football journey by joining Sheffield United, and then spent six years from 2009 with Tottenham Hotspur.

As a devoted team member, I joined Manchester City under the guidance of manager Pep Guardiola back in 2017. Fast forward to 2023, I was honored with the role of club captain, a position that allowed me to lead my teammates to six Premier League triumphs, two FA Cup victories, and the prestigious titles of UEFA Champions League and UEFA Super Cup winners.

Previously, it’s been mentioned that Kyle’s personal background has significantly influenced the way he raises his four sons, all of whom he shares with his spouse, Annie Kilner.

As an overly enthusiastic parent, I’ve decided to adopt a no-mercy policy when playing with my kids, especially during our backyard football matches. I refuse to let them win every time, for if I do, the sting of defeat might be too much for them later in life. Instead, I strive to instill a competitive spirit within them that will shape them into better individuals and future victors.

My grandparents hailed from Jamaica and handed over my father, along with £200 and a washing machine, at the age of 17 in England. Consequently, this item has been passed down through generations, reaching me from my father.

As a devoted disciple, I strive to tread new paths whenever I can. Yet, when it comes to the lessons I learned from him about triumph, I make it my mission to instill those values in the young lads under my guidance.

Kyle, currently making £160,000 per week at City, expressed a partial desire for his children to experience the same nurturing environment as he did in his childhood.

As a lifestyle enthusiast, I find myself enjoying luxurious items, yet my children are left to amuse themselves, often engaging in playtime with one another. That’s essentially our routine.

‘At times, it would be wonderful if I could have lived in a diverse community as a child, allowing me to interact with various individuals and make new friends instead of always calling the same old ones.’

Kyle is currently battling to save his relationship with Annie, 32, after fathering not one but two children with Lauryn during their marriage.

Annie evicted him from their $5.3 million country estate in Cheshire after the truth emerged, forcing Kyle to secure a six-month rental property instead.

In July, Lauryn unfortunately lost her court case regarding child support with the footballer, following several challenging months.

During an interview with The Sun on Sunday, the influencer characterized Kyle as an individual who sought to “have his benefits and enjoy them,” rather than being unfairly labeled as a gold digger. She emphasized that her actions are merely aimed at what’s best for their shared children.

At times, I can feel weary due to all the criticism, yet I have no regrets about my efforts to secure a financially stable future for my children, despite their father’s mistakes.

Last month, an extraordinary court judgement saw Lauryn accused of using Kyle as an ‘open ended cheque book and of having ‘repeatedly threatened him in order to get what she wanted’.

Instead of being portrayed in the recent court case as someone driven by an unquenchable desire for wealth and constantly chasing money, she insists that her financial stability comes from her work as a social media influencer and frequent guest on television programs.
