Kym Marsh breaks her silence on Strictly scandal and ‘defends’ former partner Graziano Di Prima after he was axed for abusing Zara McDermott
As a compassionate observer, I cannot help but feel deeply moved by the experiences shared by both Graziano Di Prima and Zara McDermott. Their stories are a stark reminder of the power dynamics that exist within our society, particularly in high-pressure environments like Strictly Come Dancing.
Kym Marsh recently spoke up about the controversy surrounding Strictly Come Dancing, appearing to offer support for ousted professional dancer Graziano Di Prima.
In 2022, the actress, now 48, who was teamed up with a dancer, expressed that the experience on the BBC program was the peak of joy for her, and she was taken aback by the accusations leveled against her past dance partner.
Last month, as investigations into misbehavior continued, it was revealed that Graziano was dismissed due to verbal and physical abuse towards Love Island star Zara McDermott during rehearsals the previous year.
To The Sun, Kym stated, “I’d rather not delve deeply into another person’s journey. That show was undeniably one of the most incredible experiences I’ve ever had, and it was simply fantastic.”
I haven’t had any experiences similar to those we’ve heard about. What I’ve encountered certainly doesn’t match my personal experiences at all.
When asked if she was surprised at the allegations made against Graziano, she answered: ‘Yeah’.
In the previous month, Graziano expressed his regret for having kicked Zara during practice sessions. A representative for him clarified to BBC News, “It’s never acceptable to kick or behave in such a manner, and he fully understands this fact.”
He knows he’s made a mistake. He apologised at the time.’
In light of news articles, Mark stated, ‘However, he seems unaware of certain aspects related to it. The portrayal of the topic in online discussions, versus his recollection, appears to differ.’
He continued: ‘He [Graziano] has literally cut himself off from civilisation. I think that’s a wise thing to do, supported by his wife. He’s coming to terms with his mental health issues.’
Initially thinking the situation was settled, Graziano found himself let go from the program following the exposure of a related video clip to the BBC officials.
Inquiry about his actions started due to Strictly’s efforts to maintain a respectful environment following allegations of abusive behavior against Giovanni Pernice from his dance partner Amanda Abbington in 2023, leading to his departure from the show. However, Giovanni maintains his innocence regarding these accusations.
Based on what sources inside the show claim, distressing videos showing Graziano treating Zara unfairly left the management with no other option than terminating his contract.
On Instagram, Graziano posted about his departure from Strictly, expressing remorse for the circumstances that caused it. He admitted that his strong desire and dedication to win could have influenced his training methods.
‘Respecting the BBC HR process, I understand it’s best for the show that I step away.’
He went on to say: ‘Though certain parts of this tale include factors from outside sources I currently can’t disclose, I stand resolute in supporting my loved ones – family and friends.’
‘I wish the Strictly family and the BBC nothing but success in the future.’
In his final thoughts, he expressed gratitude towards everyone who’s aided him in his professional and personal journey. When the opportune moment arrives, he intends to reveal his tale.
Simultaneously, Zara finally spoke up, confessing that she had hesitated to reveal the truth about Graziano due to concerns for her own future.
On Instagram, she expressed: “I thought it necessary to share some thoughts about the latest news stories. Strictly is undeniably one of the most enchanting shows on television, and as a young girl, I’ve always aspired to be part of it.”
When I got invited to compete on the show, it felt like a long-cherished dream from my childhood was finally realized. Aware of the intensity and dedication Strictly required, I gave it my all. Being a determined individual, I was ready to invest whatever effort was necessary.
A significant portion of my time on Strictly felt like a perfect dream come true. Working alongside the dedicated production team, backstage personnel, and my fellow competitors was truly extraordinary.
Although my time within the training room differed significantly, accounts about my treatment during the show have been documented, with several individuals bearing witness to certain occurrences. Moreover, there exist troubling videos depicting specific instances that are extremely difficult to watch.
Zara explained that she didn’t report the incidents at the time as she was ‘scared’ of backlash.
Rather than Giovanni himself, it was the junior production team members who stepped forward to disclose what they had observed during the ongoing probe regarding him.
According to a source from the program, there were several instances where both physical and verbal assaults occurred. The physical attacks outnumbered the verbal ones, but both types were truly awful.
In her statement, Zara elaborated that she struggled with apprehension regarding the act of disclosure: She worried about potential negative reactions from the public, she fretted over the uncertain future, and she feared being blamed as a victim.
However, following numerous heart-to-hearts with my cherished ones, I have found the courage to tackle my apprehensions. When invited to share my experiences on the BBC, I spoke openly and honestly about my journey on the program.
Overcoming my apprehension about disclosing personal details, I grappled with the fear of potential criticism, uncertainty about my future, and anxiety over being judged as a victim. However, after numerous heart-to-heart talks with those closest to me, I found the courage to confront these fears. When invited by the BBC to share my experiences on their show, I chose to speak honestly and openly.
In today’s world, where social media amplifies many voices, it can be challenging for individuals, particularly women, to express their opinions freely within our society due to existing cultural norms. Over the course of creating numerous documentaries, I’ve observed this pattern recurrently.
