Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu Can Fix the Show’s Worst Storyline

The new movie, This is the Way!, arrives in theaters on May 22nd. It’s the first Star Wars film since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. The story follows Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin and his companion, Grogu, as they journey to defeat those who support the remnants of the Empire and other criminals throughout the galaxy.

The Mandalorian and Grogu aired for three seasons on Disney+ from 2019 to 2023 and quickly became a fan favorite among Star Wars enthusiasts. However, many viewers felt the show’s quality declined in its final season. While The Mandalorian didn’t fully capitalize on a promising storyline, an upcoming movie is expected to continue the story and potentially address those issues.

The Mandalorian Season 3 Failed Its Best Storyline

Everyone knows that in the latest season, Din Djarin and Grogu join forces with Bo-Katan Kryze and a large group of Mandalorians to recapture their home planet, Mandalore. They uncover a decades-long deception by the Empire, which claimed the planet’s surface was uninhabitable due to bombing when, in reality, it’s been secretly used for cloning. Through this journey, both traditionalist and more common Mandalorians learn to put aside their disagreements and work together to reclaim their world.

Looking at the big picture, the plot of The Mandalorian‘s third season is actually quite solid. The first two seasons clearly set up the story for a return to Mandalore. This storyline isn’t flawed at all – in fact, it’s the best part of Season 3. The main issue is that the show doesn’t focus on it enough.

As a big fan, I loved the first couple of seasons of The Mandalorian because each adventure felt like a classic Western – usually wrapped up in just one or two episodes. But season three felt different. It tried to do the same thing with smaller stories, but it just didn’t work as well. The main storyline felt really stretched out, and we spent way too much time on side quests. Like, a whole episode with Doctor Pershing on Coruscant? Another on a weird planet with Jack Black and Lizzo? And then two episodes dealing with pirates? By the time all that was over, there wasn’t enough time left to really focus on what the season was actually about.

The show didn’t explore the retaking of Mandalore enough. Dedicating a full eight episodes to this storyline, including the conflicts between those involved, would have been a great way to build on everything the previous two seasons established. If done well, it could have been the series’ strongest arc and a fitting continuation of Season 2’s success.

Following the story of The Mandalorian and Grogu a few years after Season 3, the next Star Wars film needs to learn from past errors and avoid repeating them.

The Mandalorian and Grogu Needs to Learn From the Show’s Most Disliked Season

I’m really hoping the Mandalorian and Grogu movie learns from what happened with the last season of the Disney+ show. What frustrated a lot of fans, myself included, was how much the story jumped around. That might have been okay for TV, but a movie needs to be more focused. I think the film needs to pick one main story and really commit to it – our favorite duo deserves a strong, clear adventure on the big screen!

The first trailers for The Mandalorian and Grogu show Din Djarin and Grogu traveling to different planets to track down criminals and those still loyal to the Empire. This could become a problem if the movie tries to juggle too many missions and conflicts with various villains, including Imperial leaders and other bounty hunters, potentially making the plot overly complicated.

The filmmakers are aiming to weave all the storylines from the new movie into one cohesive plot. If they don’t, the film risks feeling like a collection of separate episodes—similar to how The Mandalorian is structured—simply stretched out for the big screen. After a seven-year wait for a new Star Wars movie, fans are hoping for a more unified and cinematic experience.

It appears the new movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu, won’t focus on reclaiming Mandalore. Bo-Katan Kryze and other Mandalorians aren’t expected to appear, hinting the story will center solely on Din Djarin and Grogu. While many fans hoped for more of the Mandalorian civil war, their absence suggests the filmmakers are trying to keep the story streamlined and focused.

What to Expect From The Mandalorian and Grogu

With three years having passed since the end of The Mandalorian Season 3, it’s reasonable to expect that The Mandalorian and Grogu will benefit from lessons learned in the Disney+ series. Jon Favreau and Lucasfilm have had plenty of time to consider fan reactions to the last season and use that feedback to improve the upcoming movie.

While The Mandalorian and Grogu travel to various parts of the galaxy, the show’s trailers suggest a larger story connecting their adventures. It’s possible that the people they encounter are all linked, perhaps to a growing Imperial threat that could bring darkness back to the galaxy.

It appears this may be the final chapter for Din Djarin and Grogu, at least for the near future. Star Wars is moving into a new phase of storytelling, likely focusing on fresh characters with less connection to the Skywalker family. This suggests it’s a good time to let Din Djarin and Grogu’s story conclude, allowing them to live their lives beyond the screen.

It’s possible that The Mandalorian and Grogu could lead into a new story arc, potentially connecting to Dave Filoni’s upcoming Star Wars movie. Rumors suggest this movie will be based on Heir to the Empire and will focus on the resurgence of the Empire and a war against the New Republic. Because of the connections between The Mandalorian and Grogu and this larger storyline – often called “The Mandoverse” – the series would be a natural way to introduce the events of the film. By the end of the series, viewers should know if Din Djarin and Grogu will be involved in the fight against the villain Thrawn.

The Mandalorian and Grogu have a chance to improve upon some issues with Season 3 and launch Star Wars into a fresh, compelling direction. It’s still uncertain if they’ll be able to do so.

The Mandalorian and Grogu hits theaters on May 22.
