Ben Cousins opens up about battle with addiction that saw him jailed several times – as he admits he is the ‘happiest’ he has ever been
As a lifestyle expert with extensive experience, I can confidently say that Ben Cousins’ story is truly inspiring. His journey from the pinnacle of sports success to battling addiction and finally finding happiness again serves as a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to turn things around.
Former Dancing With the Stars contestant Ben Cousins, who previously struggled with addiction issues, shared that he is currently experiencing the greatest happiness in his life following his successful recovery.
On the Kyle and Jackie O Show on Monday, the ex-AFL player confessed that he had returned to a good mental state.
‘Life’s pretty good actually,’ Ben told the radio duo.
I feel great and have regained my drive, so I’ve been keeping myself occupied with work. Things are looking up for me now, and it’s been a while in the making.
Admiring the transformation in Cousin’s lifestyle, co-host Kyle commented, ‘Wow, things sure look different for you now.’
Sandilands posed a question: Is it preferable to be an athlete performing optimally, or to be an athlete who is not at their best and acting as if they’re a mad, chaotic mastermind?
The retired athlete remarked, “Though my life has significantly changed, maintaining physical fitness throughout my training has consistently remained the same.”
Afterwards, Kyle inquired from Ben if perhaps he could offer guidance to the younger generation who may find themselves treading a comparable dangerous route.
Kyle inquired, “Do you have a message for today’s youth? You know how they behave. They don’t seem interested in the pre-made drinks as we did back then. Instead, it appears that they are experimenting with pills, and their behavior seems erratic.”
It came to light that dissatisfaction underpinned his struggles, and using drugs further exacerbated an already complex situation for him.
‘Everyone’s got their own journey,’ Ben said.
Reflecting upon my personal journey, I’d say it serves as a warning tale, stemming from the harsh lesson I learned when I lost everything that mattered to me – my livelihood. When I boil it down to its essence, I was unhappy for quite some time, and circumstances like these didn’t exactly improve my situation but rather added more complexity.

Instead, Ben mentioned that if given a chance, he would have pursued more inspiring companions in his journey through life.
Given another chance, I would prefer to invest some time with the appropriate individuals, just to explore alternative paths I might have taken.
‘Everyone got their won things they grapple with at different times. No one gets an easy ride.’
In the year 2005, Ben clinched the prestigious Brownlow Medal, and he served as the captain of the West Coast Eagles from 2001 to 2005. During these seasons, he garnered the club’s best and fairest awards on four occasions.
Over two hundred thirty-eight matches, he scored two hundred five goals while playing for the West Coast Eagles. In that same team, he clinched a championship in the year 2006.
In 2007, my open struggles commenced as whispers about my drug involvement emerged, coinciding with events such as deserting my vehicle to escape the law and being discovered slumbering outside a casino.
Regardless of attempts for rehabilitation, such as stays in expensive American recovery centers, his problems continued unabated, ultimately leading to numerous arrests and legal complications.
As a steadfast devotee, I persisted with my professional football career, despite a suspension from the AFL in 2007. In the year 2009, I found myself joining forces with Richmond. However, after two energetic seasons, I decided to hang up my cleats and retire from the game.
In the span of thirteen years, he ended up imprisoned six different times. During the year 2020 alone, he served a seven-month sentence. It seems that towards the end of that year, he concluded it was time to make a change.
In addition, the private life of cousins experienced upheaval as well, with relationships becoming tense and a series of legal complications arising from past partnerships and offspring.
On Sunday evening, Ben’s journey in Dancing With The Stars came to an unexpected end during a tough three-way elimination, along with Adam Dovile and Shane Crawford.
