Ewan Mitchell watched his House of the Dragon nude scene with his mom (without warning her)

As a seasoned gamer who has witnessed countless epic battles and dramatic twists in the realm of fantasy gaming, I must say that Ewan Mitchell’s portrayal of Aemond Targaryen in HBO’s House of the Dragon has been nothing short of captivating. His performance, coupled with his endearing interviews, has won over not just my fandom heart but countless others as well.

The hit HBO series “House of the Dragon,” a prequel to “Game of Thrones,” is currently on a multi-year break following the completion of its second season on August 4. As fans revisit the highs and lows of the past season, there’s an abundance of cast and crew interviews available for reading and viewing. One standout performer from the show, Ewan Mitchell, may not have had much screen time as Aemond Targaryen, but he captured the hearts of many viewers (including mine) with his powerful acting and charming interview snippets.

During an interview on BBC podcast “Loose Ends,” actor Mitchell discussed the traits of Aemond and admitted that he hasn’t watched “Game of Thrones.” In one humorous anecdote from the conversation, Mitchell reminisced about watching “House of the Dragon” season 2 with his mother, which included a nude scene from episode three, “The Burning Mill.” However, he didn’t warn her beforehand about the explicit content. Listen to Mitchell recount the amusing incident:

Mitchell humorously recollected, “I believe our neighbors must have heard her shout.” He also shared a tale about a set of principles that Aemond follows, vividly illustrating this when he rose from his seat and left the room naked, influenced by Robert DeNiro’s character Neil McCauley in the 1995 movie ‘Heat’.

The actor has frequently discussed his explicit scenes in the second season of ‘House of the Dragon’, where Aemond shares a secret with a woman named Sylvi at a brothel. While in one episode, the character is only shown lying down in a fetal position, the following episode includes a full-frontal nude scene of him standing up. For Mitchell, it was significant for Aemond to be completely exposed, although the decision wasn’t made lightly. It’s intriguing to consider if Mitchell took his family’s potential reactions into account during their discussions about this choice, but he must have discovered their feelings eventually.

In an interview for “Loose Ends,” they grilled me about the filming process of riding dragons, something I’ve grown quite familiar with in House of the Dragon. You know, the show where I’m fortunate enough to be one of the dragon riders, having snagged the biggest beast in all of Westeros when I was still a young ‘un. During our podcast chat, one of my pals quipped that he wouldn’t fancy doing those scenes au naturel, and I wholeheartedly agreed, chuckling along with him.

Mitchell has been praised by the show’s fanbase for his commitment to his character, a trait that shines through in every interview he conducts. Interestingly enough, he hasn’t watched “Game of Thrones,” but it’s clear that he’s carefully considered his portrayal of Aemond and is prepared to go to great lengths to ensure the story comes alive.

Aemond is “definitely going to retaliate” in House of the Dragon season 3

Mitchell additionally discussed potential actions for Aemond with Inverse regarding the third season of “House of the Dragon”. Given his current predicament, marked by being outnumbered and disowned by family members such as his mother Alicent and sister Helaena, we can expect a character who is increasingly desperate and unpredictable. As for the Targaryens, they have always been regarded as divine rather than human. The actions of Rhaenyra at the end of Episode 7 significantly undermine this belief that only legitimate Targaryens can ride dragons. While Aemond’s lineage seems legitimate, the rest of Westeros does not share this view.

As Aemond says at the end of Episode 8 in that confrontation with his mother and his sister, the people of Westeros ultimately see commonfolk made into dragon lords. It very much paints a large target not only on Aemond’s back but also on the back of all the Targaryens. It compromises their godlike status in a sense. And Aemond is definitely going to retaliate.

As we move into season 3, Aemond appears to be the main antagonist, but Mitchell believes it’s not as straightforward as that. “It’s simple to label him a villain based on his appearance,” the actor explained. “His Targaryen black hair, long locks, and eye patch all give off a villainous vibe, but it depends on which side you’re on. He’s the one ready to commit the necessary evil. He desires to be seen as a war hero. He knows he can be loved, but he knows he can accomplish more if he inspires fear. He has done many wrongs to reinforce the idea that he is the show’s villain. For me, the most intriguing aspect of this role is uncovering his complexities and understanding that he isn’t just a one-dimensional villain.”

As we eagerly anticipate the arrival of season 3 of “House of the Dragon” in around 2026, you might want to spend your time productively by checking out Mitchell’s impressive acting portfolio. You can do this by streaming “The Last Kingdom” on Netflix, “Saltburn” on Amazon Prime Video, and the often overlooked gem “High Life”, which is currently available on Max.
