As an ardent fan of Formula 1 who has witnessed the sport’s evolution over the past few decades, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and intrigue about the potential moves that are shaping up for the future. The prospect of Adrian Newey joining Aston Martin seems to be gaining traction, and if it indeed materializes, it could be a game-changer for the Silverstone outfit.

There’s been much discussion and conjecture regarding the future of renowned engineer Adrian Newey in Formula 1, long before it was officially announced in May that he would part ways with Red Bull at the end of the 2024 season, marking the culmination of a near-two-decade tenure.

Multiple teams are rumored to be interested in the 65-year-old British individual, who has shown no signs of confirming his continued involvement in Formula 1.

Nevertheless, these references appear to be largely speculative, with a significant focus on unverified gossip, such as claims suggesting he would join Ferrari and immediately start working on their 2025 model once permitted.

It’s been reported that Newey has supposedly agreed to a four-year contract with Aston Martin, valued at around $400 million. This agreement is anticipated to be officially unveiled in September.

Absolutely, until further confirmation arrives, approach this news with some skepticism, but it’s important to note that this recent development appears to be better substantiated compared to the rumors about his involvement with other teams such as Ferrari, Williams, and Mercedes.

From the get-go, Aston Martin has been one of the teams eagerly seeking Newey’s expertise, and team owner Lawrence Stroll has proven to be incredibly ambitious in his efforts to strengthen the Formula 1 team he acquired in 2018. This acquisition marked the return of Aston Martin to the sport after a hiatus of over six decades, which was finally achieved in 2021.

And Aston Martin reportedly aren’t planning on stopping there.

If Silverstone successfully hires Newey from 2025 onwards, they might then shift their attention to another top talent who is currently working with Red Bull.

Title holder and presently leading world champion Max Verstappen, who is under contract with Red Bull until the year 2028, has been linked with a potential early exit due to some controversy surrounding team principal Christian Horner during preseason. Rumors suggest his contract might include provisions that would enable him to depart earlier.

It is believed that one of the clauses refers to important team members potentially leaving, and Newey was reportedly among those key individuals. When it was confirmed that he was indeed leaving, discussions about Verstappen’s future intensified, particularly since it has become increasingly apparent that his father, Jos, and Horner do not see eye to eye.

It’s been hinted that Verstappen might join Mercedes as well, with Toto Wolff openly expressing his preference for the 26-year-old Dutchman to succeed Lewis Hamilton, who is moving to Ferrari, alongside George Russell. However, it seems like Mercedes already has a backup plan in place, as their junior driver Kimi Antonelli looks set for a promotion ahead of schedule.

It seems highly likely that Verstappen will continue with Red Bull through 2025. However, speculation persists regarding his future plans beyond 2026, as a major shift in Formula 1 rules is expected to take place during this period.

Fernando Alonso has renewed his deal with Aston Martin, keeping him on board until the end of the 2026 racing season. However, due to his age and recent team performance issues causing some dissatisfaction, there’s a rising buzz that he might choose to retire prematurely instead of continuing with the team as they adapt to new regulations. By the time the 2026 season concludes, Fernando will be 45 years old.

After the 2022 season, Alonso, a two-time Formula 1 world champion, took over from four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel, who was Stroll’s first significant acquisition by Aston Martin upon their return to F1. Might the team consider replacing Alonso with another multiple-time world champion within just under two years?

The other driver on the team is Lawrence’s son Lance, who recently renewed his multi-year contract, keeping him with the team up until at least the 2026 season. There are rumors that he might transition into a management position within the team, but in essence, he has a binding agreement with the team until he chooses to retire.

While it’s important to note that Alonso isn’t definitively the driver Verstappen will replace, considering the rumors suggesting him as a potential choice for 2026, and both Aston Martin drivers having contracts extending until then, it seems all possibilities are open for discussion.

It may also be worth mentioning that Aston Martin and Red Bull had an innovation partnership from 2016 to 2020, with Aston Martin even serving as the title sponsor of the Red Bull Formula 1 team from 2018 to 2020. Additionally, the partnership between the brands allowed Newey to collaborate with Aston Martin on a road car project.
