As a longtime fan of the Scream franchise, I must admit that I find myself deeply troubled by the recent turn of events. Jenna Ortega’s heartfelt words about the need for honesty and open dialogue in Hollywood resonate profoundly with me.
Jenna Ortega has broken her silence on Melissa Barrera’s firing from Scream 7.
Previously, it was announced that the actor playing Sam Carpenter was removed from the seventh film of the series, allegedly due to statements she made concerning the Israel-Palestine dispute.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Ortega did not explicitly mention Barrera, but she did discuss Hollywood’s stance on the ongoing conflict and touched upon her co-star’s termination.
She expressed that the industry we’re involved in tends to prioritize emotional connection over hard facts. People seem overly concerned with political correctness, which she believes can strip us of our authenticity and moral principles, as it often lacks candor.
“It would be wonderful if our discussions were more open and accepting, where people feel free to express their thoughts without fear of judgment. Ideally, such conversations would lead to thoughtful debates rather than heated arguments.”
She added: “Am I describing world peace?”
After Barrera left the Scream franchise, Ortega and director Christopher Landon also chose to part ways due to scheduling issues.
In April, Barrera expressed gratitude towards her fans upon learning about her departure, describing their support as both “beautifully surprising” and “unexpectedly touching”.
She shared with Entertainment Weekly that she hadn’t anticipated the response. Witnessing the affection and backing from fans who appreciate the significance beyond a film, she realized this was more than just a movie – it was a deeper experience. And for that, she feels profound gratitude.
In response, the star expressed: “The affection shown by the Scream fanbase left me feeling incredibly affirmed. It was profoundly moving when, amidst feelings of isolation and fear, I found myself lifted up by their support.”
