BTS Member Suga Breaks Silence Over Drink-Driving Incident
As a dedicated fan of BTS and specifically, the talented Min Yoon-gi, also known as Suga, I find myself both saddened and understanding about his recent incident involving alcohol consumption while operating an electric scooter.
On Tuesday night, BTS member Suga (Min Yoon-gi) admitted fault and offered an apology for getting a DUI fine while riding a scooter under the influence of alcohol.
On the social media platform Weverse, which is owned by the K-pop company HYBE, the popular musician, aged 31, expressed deep regret and apologies for not meeting the expectations of his worldwide fans, saying he was deeply saddened.
As a movie lover myself, I’d put it like this: “I cruised my scooter about 500 meters (1,640 feet) today, as reported by Reuters, but little did I know that misfortune was lurking just outside my home in Hannam-dong, an upscale Seoul neighborhood. It turns out, I was under the influence and didn’t realize it’s illegal to ride an electric scooter while drunk here.”
The musician stated, “I took a breathalyzer test, lost my driver’s license, and received a fine as a result. Even though no one got hurt and nothing was broken, I accept full accountability for this situation – there are no justifications or exceptions.”
According to reports from the Yonhap news agency and the Seoul Yongsan Police Station, as well as the Korean newspaper Maeil Business Newspaper, BTS member Suga was found to have a blood alcohol level of 0.08%, which is allegedly in violation of South Korea’s Road Traffic Act. This means that Suga may be facing charges related to this offense.
“I’m truly sorry for any pain I’ve caused through my thoughtless actions. Moving forward, I promise to be more mindful and prevent such mistakes.”
The apology from BTS’s label (Big Hit, owned by HYBE) followed their announcement on Wednesday about an incident involving Suga, for which they offered an apology on his behalf.
“We’re truly sorry for any inconvenience or distress our artist may have caused due to his unsuitable actions. As a professional, he will face the necessary consequences within his workplace for causing public disturbance. To ensure similar incidents don’t happen again in the future, we will be more vigilant. Thank you for your understanding.”
BTS took a break starting from 2022. During this time, each member worked on separate ventures such as high-profit fashion collaborations. However, all seven of them have since been called for compulsory military service in South Korea, which requires able-bodied men aged 18 to 35 to serve. It’s anticipated that they will regroup and resume their musical activities together around 2025.
Currently, Suga is performing his military service as a social service agent. He commenced his service at a front-line training camp in December 2022. However, he was found unsuitable for regular combat duty due to health reasons, and he started his current position in September 2023. According to Forbes, this may be related to a shoulder surgery Suga underwent in 2020, as reported by Korean media.
