Why does Aemond turn back around at the end of House of the Dragon season 2 episode 7?

Why does Aemond turn back around at the end of House of the Dragon season 2 episode 7?

As a passionate fan with years of Game of Thrones lore embedded deep within my memory banks, I must say that the latest episode of “House of the Dragon” was nothing short of exhilarating! The much-anticipated ‘Sowing of the Seeds’ event finally unfolded, and it did not disappoint.

1. Alternate Version: The just-released installment of “House of the Dragon” is undeniably one of the season’s most suspenseful, marking the long-awaited Sowing of the Seeds occurrence. With a pressing need for more dragonriders, Rhaenyra issues a summons across the realm for Targaryen offspring to attempt seizing a dragon—a daring and crucial step, given the inherent risks involved. Although most of the episode, dubbed “The Red Sowing,” is engaging, it’s only in the last 20 minutes that the action truly escalates to heart-pounding heights. Here’s to dragons!

1. In the most recent episode, Aemond is scarcely present until the finale. The events at King’s Landing remain relatively quiet until a dragon soars through the metropolis, catching the attention of both the commoners and the Small Council. At Dragonstone, two individuals establish connections with dragons: Hugh with Vermithor, and Ulf with Silverwing. Ulf, in a rather comical fashion, navigates his way to the city on the very same dragon that Queen Alysanne once rode.

1. It’s no shock that Aemond reacts swiftly upon spotting Silverwing; however, some viewers are taken aback by his subsequent actions at Dragonstone. Upon understanding the situation, he promptly dismounts and mounts a horse, racing towards Vhagar before climbing aboard for flight to track Silverwing. Despite Vhagar’s eagerness to continue, Aemond commands her to halt and reverse course. The sight that causes Aemond such alarm? Other dragons! His decision to return to King’s Landing is straightforward – he recognizes his disadvantage in numbers.

Aemond’s decision to not pursue Silverwing is smart

Despite Vhagar being the largest dragon in the realm, it would be perilous for her to face off against more than three dragons. You should recall that Vermithor ranks as the second-largest dragon following Vhagar. These aren’t small creatures we’re talking about here. In the series finale scene, Rhaenyra appears content having chased Aemond away, with Syrax, Vermithor, and Silverwing by her side. She boasts a greater number of dragonriders than before – Seamsoke, Arrax, and Moondancer – and if Daemon returns from Harrenhal (hoped for in the season finale!), she’ll gain Caraxes as well. Aemond may not be privy to all the facts, but observing Rhaenyra’s expanded dragonrider force is enough motivation for him to retreat to King’s Landing and devise the greens’ next plan. While unpredictable, Aemond isn’t foolish.

Simultaneously, Rhaenya might not be following Aemon due to the fact that although she has gained more dragonriders with Addam, Hugh, and Ulf, they are all novices when it comes to mastering their dragons. They are not yet prepared for battle situations. Aemon remains unaware of this.

Based on the sneak peek of season 2’s finale, it seems there will be plenty of excitement in store. While we may not encounter another massive fight, we can anticipate seeing more armies and, surprisingly, additional dragons. With Rhaenyra gaining more dragon support, her adversaries, including Aegon’s followers, should remain cautious. The pairing of Aemond and Vhagar is a formidable combination, but what transpires when multiple dragons confront them? Aemond plans to enlist Helaena and her dragon Dreamfyre, while Daeron’s dragon Tessarion makes its debut in the sky. However, we are yet to discover the fate of King Aegon’s dragon Sunfyre; it might still be recuperating alongside its injured master.

“Just as Aegon exclaimed earlier, it’s time for battle! Don’t forget to catch the thrilling season finale of ‘House of the Dragon’ this Sunday, August 4th, only on HBO and HBO Max!”
