Game of Thrones alum Ciarán Hinds will play another wizard in The Rings of Power season 2

As a lifelong gamer and devoted fan of J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic “Lord of the Rings” universe, I can’t help but feel both excited and apprehensive about Amazon’s upcoming second season of “The Rings of Power.” The first installment garnered mixed reviews, with some critics praising its spectacular visual effects and others finding the storyline lacking. Yet, I choose to keep an open mind.

Amazon is preparing for the release of the second installment of “The Rings of Power,” its expensive and intriguing Lord of the Rings prequel series, which unfolds during the Second Age of Middle-earth, long before Bilbo, Frodo, Aragorn, and most other familiar characters graced the world. The initial season received considerable criticism, and there are indications that enthusiasm for the upcoming one is waning. However, let’s keep an open mind about it, shall we?

Ciarán Hinds, known for his impressive acting skills, is set to join the second season of the show as a wizard, according to Games Radar. I’m confident that he will add depth and appeal to the character, even if it feels like a departure from my mental image of him as Mance Rayder in “Game of Thrones” or as Gandalf-like figures in “Lord of the Rings.”

Maybe. The Lord of the Rings creator J.R.R. Tolkien actually played pretty fast and loose when it came to the role of the wizards in Middle-earth. Let’s take a closer look:

What wizard is Ciarán Hinds playing in The Rings of Power season 2?

We’ve been introduced to one wizard in this series, referred to as the Stranger, portrayed by Daniel Weyman. There are strong hints suggesting that he is none other than Gandalf, the renowned wizard from J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic “Lord of the Rings” books. In this fictional universe, wizards represent deity-like beings dwelling in Valinor, a land situated far beyond the western sea. While you don’t need to be familiar with this backstory to appreciate “The Lord of the Rings,” it explains the role of Gandalf as a powerful sorcerer.

Toward the close of season 1, the enigmatic figure known as the Stranger (Markella Kavenagh as Nori’s companion) journeyed eastward through Middle-earth. Their destination: the realm of Rhûn, where they aim to thwart the resurgence of Sauron (Charlie Vickers), a formidable adversary currently on the loose in Tolkien’s literature. In Tolkien’s works, there are references to two wizards named Alatar and Pallando, who also venture eastward. However, Tolkien provides scant details about these figures and they do not feature prominently in his well-known tales.

During his entire life, Tolkien had different opinions regarding the arrival time of the wizards in Middle-earth. At one instance, it seemed that all five wizards – Gandalf, Saruman, Radagast, Alatar and Pallando – entered the Third Age, much later than the occurrences described in “The Rings of Power.” The Blue Wizards, Alatar and Pallando, ventured towards the east and were never heard from again. Their mission to prevent Sauron’s rise may have failed.

Later on in Tolkien’s life, he changed his perspective and penned down the idea that the Blue Wizards appeared during the Second Age. He speculated that these wizards effectively weakened Sauron in the eastern regions, implying that our heroes would have faced much grimmer outcomes had the Blue Wizards not acted.

According to one interpretation, the Blue Wizards might have entered Middle-earth during the Second Age, while the other three joined later in the Third Age. Alternatively, they could have arrived together in Middle-earth during the Second Age, but this detail is still unclear.

As a gamer, I can’t help but be intrigued by the enigma that is “The Rings of Power.” Is the Stranger, with his vague recollections, truly Gandalf in disguise? Or could he be one of the Blue Wizards, unaware of his true identity? Only time will tell as we delve deeper into the series.

Based on my extensive knowledge and fascination with J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth lore, I strongly believe that the enigmatic wizards we’ll encounter in “The Rings of Power” Amazon Prime Video series’ second season are indeed none other than Alatar and Pallando. These two wizards, as per my longstanding understanding of Tolkien’s legendarium, have played pivotal roles in thwarting Sauron’s malevolent designs in the eastern parts of Middle-earth. I eagerly anticipate the confirmation of this theory when the new season premieres on August 29, 2022. The rich tapestry of Tolkien’s world continues to captivate me with each passing day and new revelation.
