Lando Norris, McLaren shortcomings show Formula 1's new biggest strength

As a long-time Formula 1 fan and follower of the sport’s intricacies, I can’t help but be enthralled by the unpredictability and nail-biting competition that has unfolded in the 2024 season. McLaren’s struggles to capitalize on their competitive car have been a learning experience for both the team and their drivers, Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo.

I’ve been a devoted F1 fan for years, and I have to admit that the 2023 season left us all feeling underwhelmed with its lackluster performances. But as if by some unfortunate twist of fate, the beginning of the 2024 season seemed poised to repeat the same disappointing trend. Red Bull and their three-time world champion driver Max Verstappen stole the show once more, earning them a string of impressive 1-2 finishes in the first five races. Adding insult to injury, they even managed a 1-3 finish. It was as if history was repeating itself before our very eyes.

At the start of this year, Red Bull seemed to have an even greater advantage over their competitors, as if they had pulled further ahead. Verstappen appeared more at ease behind the wheel than ever before, while Sergio Perez bounced back from a disappointing end to the 2023 season. It was evident that Formula 1 was in store for another year of Verstappen’s supremacy, potentially even more dominant than the previous one.

Halfway through the racing season, we’ve seen six distinct winners from four varying teams. The struggle for the top spot is tighter than ever before.

Since Lando Norris’s surprising win at the Miami Grand Prix, there’s been uncertainty among fans, teams, and drivers about who holds the top spot in Formula 1. The last time we saw such a lack of clarity was during the iconic 2012 season. Right now, it’s hard to predict who will come out on top or witness true dominance – parity is shining brilliantly.

Since the Miami Grand Prix, it’s become evident that McLaren is the only team consistently challenging for race victories. This stands out when comparing the unpredictable performances of Mercedes and Ferrari. Red Bull has managed to keep pace with or even surpass McLaren’s speeds, but they’ve experienced their share of weak showings as well, most notably in Monaco.

However, despite McLaren’s consistent speed, they have failed to win a single race since Miami.

It’s reasonable to assume that a team boasting Norris and Piastri, both elite drivers, alongside a reliable championship contender, should secure victories, no? Regrettably for McLaren and their pair of skilled racers, they’ve been undone by numerous blunders and questionable decisions, inflicting significant damage.

During the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix qualifying session, Piastri lost his front-row starting position due to his team not warning him about the fast approaching Kevin Magnussen. This unfortunate event demoted Piastri to P5 and hindered a potential McLaren collaboration against Verstappen in the race.

In the two Canadian races, Norris showcased his exceptional driving skills by moving up from third place at the start. He seized the lead during the early damp stages of the race. However, McLaren seemed to be caught off guard during the safety car period, causing them to pit a lap later for new intermediates. As a result, they both dropped back to third place behind Red Bull and Mercedes. Although Norris managed to regain second position from Verstappen, it was a race that almost slipped through his fingers.

At the Spanish Grand Prix following the next race, Norris secured pole position for his car. However, he had a disappointing start, causing him to be outmaneuvered by both Verstappen and George Russell as they approached turn one. Additionally, McLaren implemented an intriguing strategy, resulting in Norris finishing behind Verstappen and Red Bull once more despite making a late attempt to overtake.

Subsequently, the controversial Austrian Grand Prix occurred, marked by numerous attempts from Norris to overtake Verstappen through daring maneuvers during the race. In defense of his lead, Verstappen countered with defensive moves that ultimately led to a collision between the two. The unfortunate incident resulted in punctures for both drivers, allowing Russell and Mercedes to claim the victory.

If Norris had remained composed and continued to follow Verstappen instead of trying to overtake aggressively when Verstappen was penalized for a fault, Norris would have probably passed him due to his faster speed towards the end. Sadly, Norris ended up with no points and missed out on another potential win.

Lastly, there’s the British Grand Prix. At the start of the competition, Norris and Piasti overtook the two Mercedees under damp circumstances, securing first and second positions respectively. It seemed they were headed for a fantastic 1-2 victory on their home turf.

Instead, McLaren chose to keep Piastri on track for an additional lap on slick tires instead of pitting him together with Norris for a pit stop called “double stacking.” As a result, Piasti lost his chance to compete for the position.

After losing the lead, Norris unfortunately pitted for slicks a lap later than both Hamilton and Verstappen. To add to his misfortune, as he drove through his pit box, he skidded. To make matters worse, McLaren mistakenly equipped him with soft tires instead of their newly available medium tires that many teams were utilizing.

Despite Norris giving away significant time, Piastri still would have emerged victorious, as he trailed the leader by less than 13 seconds without the aid of a safety car. However, his position was negatively affected by over 20 seconds due to that extra lap on slick tires.

In total, McLaren might have secured as many as four to five victories during this racing season. However, they currently hold only one win, an unexpected outcome given that their vehicle is frequently the quickest in the field.

McLaren, previously a mid-tier team in Formula 1 for many years, and their drivers, are discovering the importance of having more than just a quick racecar to secure victories in this competitive series.

For the neutral fans of Formula 1, McLaren’s shortcomings can actually be seen as a good thing.

For McLaren enthusiasts, this isn’t relevant. However, it’s important to acknowledge that when McLaren has missed opportunities for victory, other teams have consistently capitalized on those moments.

In the past, Mercedes and Red Bull’s major flaw in Formula 1, which led to numerous mistakes and setbacks for them, has surprisingly become a significant strength in the 2024 season. Previously, these teams managed to secure victories despite their errors due to their substantial lead over the competition.

At the front of the Formula One grid, where several teams are in fierce competition for pole position and victory, McLaren’s mistakes carry heavier repercussions due to the narrow margin between contenders.

In summary, fans have received nearly the ideal setup for the competition, with the outcome heavily influenced by the driving skills and team performance, instead of just having superior cars.

As a dedicated fan, I’ve noticed that the team with the most effective strategy and the driver possessing the finest racing skills, including a superior mindset and unmatched pace, tend to emerge victorious more frequently than their competitors.

Perez is experiencing harder times than ever before while driving for Red Bull. Despite his recent subpar performances, it’s common knowledge that he is a reliable driver. The issue lies in the fact that drivers like Verstappen, Hamilton, Norris, and Russell possess exceptional skills, elevating their performances above the rest.

As a devoted fan, I’m excitedly observing the constructor battle unfold, where the stakes are high and every point matters. Despite my favorite driver seemingly out of reach for the championship title, the fierce competition between teams keeps me on the edge of my seat. It’s anyone’s game!

If the competition stays just as tight and uncertain for the year 2025 as it is now, or perhaps becomes even more so, we could be in store for an epic battle for the world championship.
