‘The Bachelor’ tapped its first Black EP in 2021. Why is she missing from the credits?

As a fan of “The Bachelorette” who has closely followed the franchise’s journey towards greater inclusivity and representation, I am both excited and disheartened by the latest developments. Jenn Tran’s historic debut as the first Asian lead was a significant step forward, but the lack of Asian men in her dating pool and the absence of Jodi Baskerville, the franchise’s first Black executive producer, from the closing credits raises concerns about the franchise’s commitment to genuine change.

As a movie-loving person, I’d put it this way: Meeting a bunch of eligible bachelors on the premiere of “The Bachelorette” had me beaming with joy and anticipation, Jenn Tran. However, dark clouds are starting to gather on my path to wedded bliss.

Tran is the first Asian lead in the widely-known reality series, and her season is seen by “Bachelor” producers as a significant step towards upholding their promise to promote diversity, surmounting the longstanding criticisms of racial bias and cultural insensitivity that have surrounded the dating show since its launch in 2002.

As Tran began her romantic journey within the franchise, it was noticeable that one of its most notable persons of color was conspicuously absent.

In 2021, Jodi Baskerville made history as the initial Black executive producer for the franchise following a controversy surrounding racism during Matt James’ tenure as The Bachelor – the first Black lead. However, in the recent premiere of “The Bachelorette” which aired on Monday, Jodi is no longer listed among the executive producers in the closing credits, three years later.

Network ABC and Warner Bros. production company chose not to discuss why Baskerville was left out of the credits for the latest episode, fueling speculation over potential changes in her role and the franchise’s dedication to racial equality.

During this run of “The Bachelorette,” there have been concerns raised over the scarcity of Asian men among Tran’s potential suitors.

In an interview with Glamour, Tran expressed disappointment over the limited Asian representation in the latest season and throughout the franchise, acknowledging this shortcoming herself. Similarly, executive producer Bennett Graebner admitted to The New York Times that they fell short, stating, “We failed to make the necessary strides this season and historically. We take responsibility for this oversight. Our intention is for Jenn to be a trailblazer, showing that our show is inclusive and welcoming to all.”

Four months after a controversial panel discussion at the Television Critics Association winter press tour, queries regarding Baskerville’s involvement arise, following intense scrutiny of “The Bachelor” franchise. During this event, executives were questioned about the franchise’s problematic racial past and its ongoing challenges with representing Black leads effectively.

Graebner and his colleagues, Claire Freeland and Jason Ehrlich, remained speechless in response to the query, resulting in a prolonged moment of uneasy quietness.

After the controversial events during James’ tenure as “The Bachelor” in 2021, resulting in Chris Harrison’s departure from the show, Baskerville was promoted to an executive producer role. James is currently the sole Black male lead in the franchise’s history.

To help mend the issues that arose during James’ tenure, the experienced franchise member, Baskerville, was appointed as an executive producer for the historic 18th season of “The Bachelorette.” This groundbreaking season featured notable firsts: Michelle Young, a Black woman, served as the lead, and Tayshia Adams, another Black woman, co-hosted.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Young expressed that having Jodi around made a significant difference for him. With another woman of color by his side, he felt supported and heard whenever he needed to discuss concerns or simply share thoughts. Moreover, Jodi facilitated inclusive conversations where everyone’s voices were welcome and valued.

She remarked, “Therefore, I believe the tale will be faithfully conveyed, becoming accessible to various communities, and most importantly, highlighting an array of heartfelt relationships.”
