The latest episodes of Maul – Shadow Lord are packed with fun references to Maul’s past and the wider Star Wars universe. Here are 18 of the most interesting Easter eggs and connections we spotted in episodes 7 and 8.

“Not The Deepest Wound”

After facing Marrok, Maul spoke with Devon Izara in the train tunnels. He admitted that while being rejected by Darth Sidious was incredibly painful, it wasn’t the worst thing Sidious would do to him. This likely refers to Sidious later killing Maul’s brother, Savage Oppress, and their mother, Mother Talzin, the leader of the Nightsisters.

Maul’s Plan To Take Out The Whole Empire

Devon doubts Maul’s claim that they can defeat the entire Empire, but Maul insists he has a plan to do so. Although Maul ultimately fails, official comics reveal that Han Solo’s former love, Qi’ra, used parts of Maul’s plan while running the Crimson Dawn organization between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Qi’ra took over leadership after Maul died in a duel with Obi-Wan Kenobi, before the events of A New Hope.

A Familiar Inquisitor Shuttle

In episode 7 of Shadow Lord, Marrok receives assistance from Inquisitors who arrive in The Scythe, a special Imperial shuttle used by the Inquisitorious. This shuttle first appeared in the 2022 series Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Eleventh Brother

The Eleventh Brother teams up with Marrok to track down Maul and the remaining Jedi. Both of these Inquisitors were first introduced in Tales of the Jedi, and interestingly, Ahsoka Tano ultimately defeats them both at different times. However, Marrok’s death by Ahsoka might not have been his first – the story suggests he was originally killed and then brought back to life using Nightsister magic. It’s possible Maul was responsible for Marrok’s initial death.

Rook’s Loyalty

Rook Kast acknowledges that Maul legitimately took control of Mandalore during the Clone Wars and still considers him a rightful ruler. However, most Mandalorians are motivated by money, which is why three mercenary allies ultimately turn against Maul and his army.

Mandalorian Gauntlet Starship

The Mandalorian rebels tried to escape Janix on a ship called a Mandalorian Gauntlet—originally featured in the animated series The Clone Wars—but were destroyed by Imperial gunships before they could get very far.

“Brother!”

When Imperial Inquisitors confronted Maul, his Zabrak allies tried to help. One of them, Scorn, who wielded a heavy cannon, was killed by the Eleventh Brother. This loss visibly upset Maul, and also Scorn’s brother, Icarus. The event likely reminded Maul of his own brother, Savage, and how Darth Sidious killed him during The Clone Wars. This echoes a reference made at the beginning of Shadow Lord episode 7, creating a full-circle moment.

“The Emperor Wants You Dead”

Okay, so the latest episode finally confirms what many of us suspected: Palpatine knew Maul was still out there during the Empire era. The Inquisitors deliver the message that he wants Maul eliminated, which is a huge reveal! And it pretty much solidifies that shadowy figure Marrok was reporting to at the end of Shadow Lord? That was definitely Palpatine pulling the strings. But honestly, the best part? Maul’s response – a simple, icy “Likewise.” Perfection. It was the perfect blend of defiance and acceptance, and honestly, gave me chills.

Sith Scream & Spin

The eighth episode of Shadow Lord opens with Maul narrowly escaping Inquisitors by triggering a cave-in and falling into a deep chasm. Immediately after, he unleashes a powerful, spinning attack accompanied by a chilling scream – a move identical to one used by his former master during his capture attempt in Revenge of the Sith, and the sound is a perfect match.

Young Maul

The episode unexpectedly shows us a young Maul haunted by painful memories and the trauma of his past. At first, he dismisses the frightened child he sees within himself, but by the end, he vows to protect others from the suffering Darth Sidious inflicted upon him. A single tear rolls down his face, making this a truly heartbreaking and unforgettable moment in the entire Star Wars saga.
