Fans of the hit sitcom How I Met Your Mother will be happy to hear that two of the show’s biggest stars are working together again! The show, which originally aired from 2005 to 2014, kept viewers laughing with its memorable characters, running gags, and the story of Ted Mosby’s search for love. Even though it’s been years since the finale, How I Met Your Mother remains incredibly popular, and many fans have been hoping for a revival – but so far, it hasn’t happened.
Though not a full-fledged reunion show, Season 2 of Shrinking brought Jason Segel and Cobie Smulders together again, having previously starred alongside each other in How I Met Your Mother. Smulders’ character, Sofi, had a brief but memorable appearance, and the chemistry between her and Segel’s Jimmy was clear. Now, with Season 3 of Shrinking, the two actors are working together once more, offering fans the How I Met Your Mother reunion they’ve been hoping for.
‘How I Met Your Mother’s Jason Segel & Cobie Smulders Cross Paths Again in ‘Shrinking’
From the moment Sofi appeared in Shrinking, it was clear she’d be significant to Jimmy’s storyline, but the show left their relationship’s future open-ended. They met when Jimmy bought a car from her for Alice and quickly connected. Although Sofi only appeared in one episode and wasn’t mentioned much after that, viewers suspected she’d return, especially after Jason Segel suggested a possible reunion in Season 3 last year. However, her reappearance came sooner than anyone anticipated.
It’s wonderful to see Michael J. Fox back on television in Shrinking, and especially heartwarming to watch his character, Jimmy, form a new connection after experiencing loss. In Season 3, Episode 2, Sofi unexpectedly shows up at Jimmy’s door, claiming she has a spare car key for him. Considering it’s been weeks since they last met, her visit clearly shows Jimmy has been on her mind.
Even though Sofi doesn’t stay for long, Jimmy finds himself increasingly drawn to her. Sofi and Jimmy are very different from Robin Scherbatsky and Marshall Erikson from How I Met Your Mother; those two characters would never have a romantic connection, but Sofi and Jimmy share a surprisingly strong and exciting chemistry.

Okay, so episode two of Shrinking‘s third season really throws Jimmy and Sofi’s potential romance into question. We see Jimmy almost go to Sofi’s, peeks in the window, then backs off – it’s frustrating, because as a viewer, you’re rooting for them to just go for it! But the episode definitely suggests Jimmy’s still got a lot to work through. Will he ever truly get over Tia and find a real, lasting connection with someone new? I’m hoping Shrinking gives him the happy ending he deserves, but it’s clear this isn’t going to be a quick or easy process.
