This article contains some moderate spoilers for Thrash.
Steven Spielberg’s Jaws remains one of the most terrifying horror films ever made, and no shark movie since has quite reached its level of fear. However, that hasn’t stopped filmmakers from continuing to make shark movies. While films like The Shallows and Open Water are known for being genuinely suspenseful, a separate trend of lighthearted, even silly, shark movies has also emerged.
This category includes both incredibly cheesy shark movies like Sharknado, and surprisingly good, lesser-known ones, such as Shark Night. Some films are hard to classify – it’s up to you to decide if they’re enjoyably bad or just plain bad. Netflix’s Thrash definitely falls into this group, with some of the most over-the-top scenes you’ll find in a shark movie.
“A Quick Gator And Snake Check”
Shark movies usually feature two types of characters: experts and those who seem destined to become shark food. While not everyone in the latter group gets eaten, they’re typically the ones who make bad decisions. For example, early in this movie, three older kids are playing in a river while a hurricane is heading straight for them. This is obviously a dangerous situation, and their attempts to stay safe are hilariously poor.
As a film buff, I always find it funny when movies do that quick “gator and snake check” – a split-second look at the water to supposedly confirm it’s safe! It’s become a bit of a trope. What’s interesting to me is that while older shark movies usually protected the kids, newer ones are giving them a little more gumption and survival skills. So, having them be totally oblivious to danger feels like a weird creative decision, honestly.
Apple Cider Vinegar’s Joe Is Mostly Armless
Most shark movies feature someone surviving a seemingly impossible injury, and this film is no exception. When Billy reappears, he’s clearly been through a lot – a bull shark has bitten off his arm. Despite this horrific injury, Billy, played by Matt Nable (known for his role in Apple Cider Vinegar), manages to pull himself together, cross the river, and make it back home.
The movie Thrash hasn’t been well-received by audiences, earning only a 25% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Surprisingly, Nable’s over-the-top performance is a highlight. While it’s absurd that his character can argue, insult people, move around, and even try to escape with a severed arm, this outlandishness is what makes him memorable.
The “Midwifery For Beginners” Scene
The show Thrash features a character who is very pregnant, and it seems inevitable that we’ll see a difficult and intense childbirth scene. However, before that happens, there are some lighter, more absurd moments, like when Lisa asks a frightened Dakota (Whitney Peak) to check her cervical dilation. While shark movies like Under Paris are often unrealistic, this show is taking things to a new level of outlandishness.
I was watching this movie, and there’s this scene where Lisa tells Dakota to basically guess if she can see the baby’s head while Dakota is way out in the water. Look, I love a good shark movie and I don’t need everything to be scientifically accurate, but usually they take creative liberties with how the sharks act, not with the actual process of childbirth! And honestly, the movie could have shown us anything else in that moment, but they went with this? It just felt…off.
Nellie, The Great White Shark
As a movie fan, I always thought great white sharks got a bad rap! Everyone assumes they’re the deadliest, but honestly, tiger sharks are probably responsible for more attacks, and bull sharks are way more aggressive. Still, in shark movies, it’s always the great white taking center stage. I was excited when I heard about Thrash because it seemed like they were finally going to focus on bull sharks, but that idea didn’t last long, apparently.
When a large, pregnant great white shark named Nellie swam into the flooded town, she immediately became the focus of attention, especially with the dramatic underwater footage. Because many people associate great whites with the movie Jaws, Nellie’s prominent feature in the promotional image likely contributed to the huge success of Thrash as a streaming series.
The “Nub” Shouting Match
Billy’s unexpected return – with an arm that isn’t bleeding despite not having a tourniquet – and his delivery of some of the movie’s funniest lines creates one of the most memorable and absurd scenes in Thrash. Though Stephen King, who gave the film his blessing, doesn’t consider it his favorite moment, it’s widely regarded as the funniest scene in the movie.
Billy, despite intending to abandon the children, continues trying to convince them to help him, claiming sharks don’t bother with kids and bizarrely pointing to his small, injured finger. Their conversation quickly turns into a ridiculous argument about whether dogs eat feces, before Billy is unexpectedly attacked and receives a just punishment.
The Scene That Will Test Viewers’ Maturity
I was honestly a little worried when Dakota, remembering what her marine biologist uncle told her about sharks, calmly announced she needed to collect everything that runs on batteries and vibrates! I’d braced myself for a chaotic scene reminiscent of Piranha 3DD, but it turned out to be a clever distraction – a total red herring. She really had me going for a moment!
The Luckiest Kick In Shark Movie History
The explosion of the shark is one of the most memorable parts of the movie Jaws, but what happens immediately after is surprisingly silly. Luckily, three kids are in a house stocked with both food and weapons. When the oldest, Ron, dives underwater to get them, he quickly finds himself in a dangerous situation.
After struggling to free himself, he swam faster than the bull shark chasing him, broke the surface, and tossed the bait steaks to his family. He pulled himself onto a table right as the shark leaped out of the water. Incredibly, a kick from his flailing leg connected with the shark’s head – a moment of pure luck rarely seen in shark movies!
“A Thousand Miles”
As floodwaters quickly filled the house and Lisa was about to give birth, she desperately searched for her calming birth playlist on her MP3 player – the one the movie had shown earlier. Lying on the bed, which was almost touching the ceiling, the player suddenly started playing Vanessa Carlton’s “A Thousand Miles.”
The movie Thrash had a few different working titles during its development. Originally, it was going to be called The Rising, then Beneath the Storm, and even Shiver before they settled on Thrash.
It’s common for creature features to have busy soundtracks, and sometimes, like in the movie Dangerous Animals, they’ll use oddly humorous songs. But this particular scene feels especially bizarre. While it seems like a long and difficult process, the ordeal isn’t finished yet.
Daphne Bridgerton Giving Birth In Shark-Infested Water
Fans of historical romance might recognize Lisa’s actress, Phoebe Dynevor, who famously played Daphne Bridgerton. This makes her role in Thrash particularly funny, considering Daphne often seemed clueless about… well, how babies are made! Luckily, Lisa’s delivery in the film is quick, but unfortunately, it happens in shark-infested waters and involves a lot of blood.
Okay, things really jump the shark here. Just moments after giving birth, Lisa delivers what Stephen King apparently hailed as the best line of 2026 – and honestly, it’s… a choice. Then, in a move that defies all logic and basic post-partum care, she cuts her own umbilical cord with a random piece of wood. Not done there, she sets the baby on… something floating, and declares she has to go fight sharks! It’s so over-the-top it almost loops back around to being funny, but mostly it’s just… a lot.
